Maybe, just maybe, someone from outside football to succeed Mike Riley is not as ridiculous as it at first sounds. After all, Messrs Don, Hackett and Riley, as former leading football referees, have not exactly been huge successes in the job, so perhaps someone with a proven track record as a referee manager in another sport could bring something different to the role. Rolland's experience of VAR in rugby would certainly be a plus.
Having said that, if it was thought to be a step too far, I would go for Howard Webb who always talks a lot of sense or perhaps Alan Wiley as a longshot within PGMOL.
