Springboks v Lions
« on: Thu 06 May 2021 23:32 »
Now that the Lions squad has been announced we can look forward to the forthcoming tour with some relish.
Thankfully Jaco Peyper won’t be reffing any of the Tests but who will?
My gut feeling would be 3 refs from 3 different countries - France, Australia and New Zealand. On this basis I would go for Poite, Gardner and Williams. They might even form a bubble and therefore a team of their own and cover all 3 Tests, each having a middle and 2 games as touch judge.
Any thoughts anyone?

It is usually the same 3 officials on the test matches with, as you say, a middle and 2 lines.

I'd be very happy with Poite on the final test, especially after his performance in 2017! However, I do think Gauzere is probably higher up the lists nowadays, unless his performance in the Wales vs England game went against him.

I do wonder if they will go 2 French officials, given the fact that they have had the chance to referee international matches already this year whereas the NZR and RA referees won't have refereed for 8 months. I'd go O'Keeffe, Gauzere and Poite in that order

Gardner, Williams, Berry and Peyper to do the 5 tour games in SA between them with the Japan game going to Raynal with Barnes and Adamson on TJ duty

Mixed emotions for me as I was supposed to be going on the Tour :(

Well the test matches obviously won't be, but there is no reason why they couldn't do a tour match, the same as Peyper. I think they may use Southern Hemisphere officials to get "match fit" that's all

I seem to remember on last tour there was 2 sets of 3 officials, first set did 3 or 4 games rotating, then the Test trio took over.

I would like to see Williams, Gardner involved, Poite over Gauzerre but think Pascal's light is a little stronger. O'Keefe should be involved as will Berry.
For once having Aus or NZ refs does not scare me.

The difficulty this time round is the likely "biosecure bubble environment" & travel/quarantine. It wouldn't surprise me if SA appoints its own referees to the non-Test games & World Rugby appoints to the 3 tests. You can perm many combinations from France, Australia & New Zealand - assuming that there is a trio who referee 1 game each then you'd have Poite/Raynal/Gauzere + Gardner/Berry + O'Keefe/Williams. It wouldn't surprise me if it was an all-French trio with a French TMO for the 3 tests. South Africa appears to be favouring NH rugby relationships after the shenanigans with Australia and New Zealand over Super Rugby.

Last time out Gardner, Gauzerre and Raynal did 3 or 4 games between them rotating, before Peypet, Poite and Garces did last few warm ups and the 3 tests.
Conceivably they will act in teams of 4, as with past Rugby Championship rotating positions
