Penalty try can only be awarded if the actions of that player prevent the try. In affect, he didnt prevent it, therefore try scored and credited to player.
Bit like yellow card in football now removed for attempting to prevent a promising attack - if you fail in your actions, you don't get penalised.
I would like to see teams given the option, even if no yellow card is issued.

For me the difference there is that in football a goal in goal, whereas in rugby a penalty try is way more advantageous than a try in the corner. I don't see why the attacking team couldn't be given the 7 points automatically at least.

Law 8 complicates matters. A penalty try can be awarded if foul play prevents a try being scored in a more advantageous position. Therefore WB would have had to satisfy himself that the scorer would not have picked the ball up and run behind the posts to ground the ball if he had not been fouled. My recollection here is hazy but on a kick and chase the attacker would just look to get a hand on the ball and ground it. A grey area imho.
Difference in 2 options was 2 points and a man advantage as a yellow card would have to be given.
