4 game refs are owens, williams, berry and gauzere do they reduce the number of refs with the knock-outs?
4 game refs are gauzere,berry

Yes they do. They'll (hopefully) pick the best performing refs from the pool stage.

In Post 17 on this thread I set out the number of games for each ref and suggested that - apart from Owens - the other refs given 4 group matches (Gauzere, Williams and Berry) had been given so as there was less chance of them featuring in the latter stages. Not sure now as Berry and Williams in particular have reffed very well whereas some of the more experienced refs might have let themselves down a bit. Will be interesting to see

do you think the selection for the knock-out will include owens and barnes?

Should be pretty much nailed on IMO.

Agreed - they have both been excellent and would be there on merit. Despite some criticism of his handling of NZ v SA, I still expect Garces to feature too. As regards Southern Hemisphere refs Peyper, for reasons I fail to see, seems to be held in high regard so will surely be there, as will Angus Gardner.
What I am not sure about is whether a reduced pool of refs will control all 4 quarters, semis, 3rd/4th play off and final or if it will be more spread out. If the latter then the likes of O’Keefe and Poite will no doubt feature too but there may still be some surprises if appointments are purely on merit - Berry and Williams spring to mind who have both been very good.
We shall see!

If previous tournaments are anything to go by the specialist touch judges will all be sent home, and the referees who aren't picked to referee knockout games will be on the touchline.

Wayne Barnes superb in RSA-ITA: communication exceptional and spot on for red card

Really hope stars align and he can get final

Horrible tip tackle and quite the right decision. Thought Barnes was excellent in ensuing nobody tried to move the player before the medics arrived.

He has not put a foot wrong so far, has had a really good tournament. Ironically knowing its his last seems to have relaxed him. V calm, great decision making
Looking forward to listening to Nige tomorrow morning

RCG - do you know if he still intends retiring as I seem to recall a report over the summer saying he was rethinking

Nothing said publicly as far as I can see/find
He is certainly young and good enough to carry on. I thought it was external pressures (job and family) were the reason
As an Exeter fan we would welcome him staying, always get a better, open game when he is in charge

Another brainless player, another very composed decision
Canadian player correctly sent off for a shoulder charge into a ruck in today's game
Luke Pearce has impressed me. He can be pleased with his involvement thus far

Wayne Barnes stepping in for an ill Mathieu Raynal in Scotland vs Russia. Showing his one Russian word "nyet" 😀

Feel sorry for Raynal. Barnes was excellent again, not a difficult game. He has a great rapport with the players and explains things really well. I like too early on when he told them to hold a scrum steady and as the ball came out he shouted “excellent, well done” or words to that effect .

Garces much more assured performance in the Wales vs Fiji game, very capably supported by Poite, Dickson and TMO
Great game to watch..wales did well to come through
Certainly more like the old Garces and one for the latter stages
