The Times this morning reports that the RU authorities have publicly criticised some of the refereeing so far as not being good enough.

That’s very interesting. Like others on here I think the officiating has been good so far overall and helped to make it an exciting event so far so am a bit surprised to hear this.
Are there any specifics in the report or just a general view?

Seems like it was just a general view.
In particular, the article referred to Romain Poite (Samoa v Russia) and  Angus Gardner (Argentina v France) but a general failure of referees to crack down on foul play and a "series of high profile  mistakes."

Watching Italy vs Canada, which although not the most difficult to officiate the co-operation between Owens and thec3 Englishmen has been brilliant

Must say I was very impressed with Nic Berry in the England v USA game. Good call for the red card and good communication throughout. Sensible decision to stop play near the end when the USA player was injured.
They were making the point on the tv coverage that being an ex player was to his advantage.
One of the less experienced refs at this WC and surely a star for the future but could still be a dark horse for a quarter final here - thinking of Wayne Barnes in 2007 especially.

I think being an ex-player could be an advantage, especially when you consider Allain Rolland. I Wonder why it doesn't happen more in football. I think he's been one of the better refs so far and that red card was an easy decision. I think he'd deserve a quarter final spot at this rate, but perhaps that rests on one of the expected quarter final refs having a shocker.

He has had 2 good games now. Hoping they appoint on merit. NZ or SA vs Jap or Scot might be a gd QF to get.
Horrendous challenge for the red, he can pack his bags

The fact an England player was cited may count against Berry as he saw it and decided to take no action.

Owens and Barnes are the only two referees who have fully convinced me so far - both good candidates for the final

They're assistants. Raynal just did south Africa v Namibia.

Post 15 in this thread gives all the group stage appointments, with each on field Ref getting 3 or 4 matches.
Carley, Dickson, Ruiz, Pickerill and Brace are there as specialist touch judges only, though Carley is also reserve ref in case of any injury

Barnes and Owens so far, so good. Wayne has his 2nd game early tomorrow morning
Gardner was decent in Japan vs Ireland (unlike the Irish team)
O'Keefe, Garces and Poite will need to hope for better performances next time out

Gauzerre is fine in and amongst the tier 2 nations. He will never be a top elite referee. Havent seen Raynal's game yet.
Barnes was v good with Geo vs Uru
Poite was better in patches today but is still struggling with recognition of sanctions. Was a thrilling game but I thought at least 2 players were fortunate not to see yellow
Owens "test" comes next week with Eng vs Arg.
Depending on which teams emerge into the latter stages will shape the discussion of who referees it. At the moment, purely from an appointing view an Eng vs Wal final would be the worst outcome

Thought Gauzerre was very good in Scotland-Samoa; got all the big calls right
