Congrats to Wayne Barnes on being named World Rugby Referee of the Year.
Well deserved.

Seconded. He has been outstanding for a season or more now. Missing out on European Cup Final as Saracens got there and World Cup due to England's progress.
Interesting to hear Glenn Delaney on BT today talking about how Barnes has helped educate clubs, coaches as well as referees (I hope this continues)

I think the PGMOL could learn a thing or two about how to effectively use video refereeing in sport too!

So the World Cup is over and I just wondered what now for the Referees Committee.
Owens (48 yrs) won’t be at another WC but would like to do more 6Ns games. Garces (46) is retiring and Barnes (40) may retire too, though I hope he reconsiders. 3 of the world’s top refs potentially finished or about to do so.
Poite (44), Gauzere (42),  Raynal (38) and Pearce (31) will presumably carry on with eyes towards WC 2023, when they should all be in the mix. But it leaves N H refereeing weakened: the thoughts of Gauzere for example in charge of a Lions tour match doesn’t fill me with deep joy.

S H refs are younger and are all likely to still be around in 2023 and even beyond - Peyper sadly (39 now), Berry (35), Gardner (35), Williams (34) and O’Keefe (30).

With the 6 Nations appointments due out soon will World Rugby be looking to blood some new talent with a view to starting  to look towards 2023 already and, if so, who? I personally would like to see 6N debuts for Andrew Brace and Karl Dickson and possibly even Alexander Ruiz. Any thoughts on these and possibly other debutants, including some S H referees? What about the likes of Anselmi and de Luca of Argentina if we are looking more globally?

The other thing I wonder is who will step into Nigel Owens shoes in Wales or will we have a period where Wales have no 1st tier international referee, as Scotland seem to have had for ages now? And on that subject are Scotland any nearer to getting a 6N ref or are they destined to continue to be without one for the foreseeable future?

Would be interested to hear what others think.

So many questions....in no particular order:

NH: Pearce, Carley, Dickson, Whitehouse from Wales (Craig Evans real star on 7s circuit), Adamson from Scotland (Blain and Grove White starting to do Pro14 games), Brace from Ireland (with Murphy and Gallagher), Raynal, Gauzerre, Ruiz (New to european top games Brousset)

SH: Gardner, Berry lead the Aus charge (Damon Murphy was good at U20), O'Keefe, Williams, Fraser, Pickerill from NZ (Jackson too old to get back?)
SA still struggling Egon Seconds must be next in line

Anselmi needs internationals, his appearances in Super Rugby have been ok

I would like to see World Rugby be brave so that the young bucks have had plenty of experience come France 2023

Some little while ago now, someone I know well and who moves in quite senior Rugby Union refereeing circles said that a young referee called Craig Maxwell-Keys was someone with extraordinary potential who many believed was going to have a stellar career. Well, that hasn't quite happened. Maxwell-Keys is certainly about and getting some good domestic matches but doesn't appear to be close to breaking into the international scene any time soon. Anyone seen him or have an opinion?

Maxwell-Keys is very good but is in the queue behind Carley, Pearce and Dickson - then again he is only 29 so still has plenty of time on his side. One for RWC 2027 perhaps! Likewise, Christophe Ridley has been refereeing Premiership rugby for a season now and is only 26. So lots of potential in the future.

In the short term, having had NH dominance at referee level for quite a few years (barely any SH refs got knockout games in 2015 and 2019), I think we will be seeing SH getting stronger as the likes of Barnes and Owens move away, and Berry, O'Keeffe and Gardner develop and mature.

Ireland has always produced some first rate rugby referees over the years. Who are the Irish stars now and perhaps for the future?  Scotland also has given us some fine referees though seems to have been rather in the doldrums of late.

Those halcyon days of Jim Fleming, Brian Anderson and Ray Megson marauding in from the north
As well as Owen Doyle, Alan Lewis, Allain Rolland trekking across the Irish sea

Andy Brace definitely a v gd referee, injury got in the way last year. Hopefully he cam stay fit

RCG is showing his relative youth here. For an older watcher:

The great Allan Hosie and Bob Burrell would have appeared in a Scottish list, with Kevin Kelleher, John West, Paddy D'Arcy and the splendid David Burnett featuring prominently for Ireland.

I particularly remember John West and David Burnett from Ireland and Alan Hosie and Jim Fleming from Scotland together with Norman Sansom from north of the Border. Another excellent  ( and rather under-rated ) Scottish referee was Ken McCartney; a firefighter by profession if my ( failing ) memory still serves me well.

So many great names from the past and all excellent refs in their own way, and still in the days of amateur referees. Stephen Hilditch too, an Irish headmaster. He and Jim Fleming both received MBEs for services to rugby.
Then there were the great French refs of the 70s and 80s in George Domercq (who was Mayor of his village for over 50 years) and Francis Palmade who used to referee all in dark blue with some sort of button up shirt.
From down under I used to rate Colin Hawke of NZ highly - the only live international I have ever been to was England v France at Twickenham in 1999 (a dire match in truth) when he was reffing but pulled a muscle and was replaced by Jim Fleming
Kerry Fitzgerald, the 1st man to ref a WC Final in 1987 was another class act - his handling of the England v Scotland semi final in 1991 was as good a performance as any that year. Tragically he died of a heart attack at work 6 weeks later aged only 43.

Excellent Wayne Barnes interview post World Cup. Looks like he is continuing for the foreseeable future after all - great news!
