RFL - Ben Thaler
« on: Tue 28 Sep 2021 20:07 »
Does anyone know what is going on with Ben again?
After a few weeks earlier in the season when he looked to have been dropped he seems to have been overlooked for the 3rd or 4th week in a row again. Even the hopeless James Child is getting games.

Think I saw him on a Championship play off, but might be old age affecting my eyes

To answer my own question I have found a separate site which says Thaler has been dropped for the play offs after a couple of poor decisions in recent games. On field appointments and video appointments for the play offs are being limited to 4 refs - Moore, Kendall, Hicks and Child 😱.
Seemingly Thaler accepted that he had made these 2 poor decisions but the argument from many on that site is that all refs make mistakes and that he has been almost hung out to dry for the last few weeks whereas other refs who have bad games seem to either get dropped for a week and reinstated or their errors conveniently overlooked. There is a lot of criticism of these 4 refs too with more than half the posters saying that in their opinion Thaler is either the best or one of the best RFL refs.
Interesting there is even a suggestion that Ganson the head of reffing is a bit if a bully and has a bit of a downer on Thaler for some reason, despite both working professionally for the RFL. Ganson often reminds me of Riley - someone who reffed far above his ability and perhaps, like Riley, is not a natural leader.

Thanks for the gen Hendo because I had been looking for info myself.
He refereed the Huddersfield v Wakefield game in the Magic Weekend and I thought that he was good, however, he has obviously upset the apple cart with his spot of bother in the past and he is definitely not flavout of the month.
Interesting comments about Ganson and he obviously has the big input as far as appointments are concerned.

I am not 100% sure that standards have been maintained over the last couple of seasons and I think that a lot of officials are relying too much on technology these days. It is a lot more black and white than football, however, I still prefer a match to be refereed on the field -----I know ---- I'm getting old!
Referee's decision used to be final!

He falls much into the Richard Silverwood category, on field can be brilliant, off field upset the hierachy.
Silverwood to me is the most natural RL ref I saw live, very old school
I like Thaler, more feel for a game than most.
Kendall is fine, Moore is growing in stature

Apparently the RFL have said that Thaler has been unavailable recently due to illness

Short, sharp and to the point. I personally would still treat this with a touch of caution as something doesn’t quite seem right.

The last game i saw of him on was on 13 aug when castleford beat st helens on their own patch.
St helens had a player sent off and finished with 12, game had quite a few sin bin visits too.

Thanks Claretman. And Steve Ganson, head of refereeing, is from St Helens. Pure coincidence of course! 🤔🤪

Upsetting st helens doesnt appear to be a good career move, a bit similar to man utd in the sir alex days.

Liam Moore should be ok then. Seemingly bottled giving a penalty try to Catalans last night in Favour of St Helens.

Not being able to hear what conversation took place, it would appear the penalty try decision was made by Video Ref, not Moore on field, so the angst should be towards James Child, as it definitely should have been penalty try

I enjoy watching rugby league and have no allegiance to any team, another big decision goes In the favour of
St Helens. Decisions whether given by on field or video refs in recent years always seem to go in their favour.
St Helens are a good side admittedly.
Ps i forgot about the St Helens player would should have red after 4 minutes for throwing a punch.
