A fortunate outcome for England regarding that catch. Or is it a case of going with on field decision? Anyhow, I note that the first test pitch has been declared substandard. Rightly so, and credit should go to players for getting a result on it!
With reference to the catch the third umpires role has changed, once the on field umpires refer to the third umpire, the third umpire decides the outcome. The on field soft signal is made in case Of technology failure, ie ultra edge not working, there being no camera angle available etc.
In this case i dont think technology failed it was just the third umpires interpretation of what happened from the pictures he was given, correct or incorrect.

Pakistan v New Zealand - TEST SERIES

FIRST TEST:
On-field: Alex Wharf (England) and Aleem Dar (Pakistan)
TV umpire: Ahsan Raza (Pakistan)

SECOND TEST:
On-field: Alex Wharf (England) and Aleem Dar (Pakistan)
TV umpire: Ahsan Raza (Pakistan)

Interesting to see Alex Wharf get appointed to a neutral Test. Obviously he is rated highly. David Boon is the Match Referee for most of the series, but Mohammad Javed from Pakistan is surprisingly listed as the Match Referee for the first Test.

Excellent appointment for Wharf - think he might be unlucky to not be selected for the world t20 - that’s the issue with so many English elites!

Also odd with a Pakistani match referee for one match and no neutral tv umpire!

TV Umpire: Michael Gough (England)

SECOND TEST:
On-field: Michael Gough (England) and Nitin Menon (India)
TV Umpire: Richard Illingworth (England)

THIRD TEST:

TV Umpire: Richard Kettleborough (England)

FOURTH TEST:

Not too pleased about Joel Wilson being appointed to this series. I would have preferred almost any other Elite Panel member.

Big ask on Menon to be on field in all 4 Tests too

I must say, the whole point of keeping a home umpire for a test match was to consolidate the experience gained during Covid. Appointing the home elite umpire to all 4 tests seems to go agaist this logic. For me, a reuturn to full teams of neutral officials and also the use of some neutral officials in ODI series is required, allowing umpires to gain experience all around the globe like previously!

Congratulations to Kim Cotton - whilst other female officials have officiated mens ODIs/T20Is, I believe this will be the first occasion a female official will be on field for an international match between two male full member teams! It’s about time this glass ceiling was broken as some of the top female umpires are excellent!

Not sure I’ve seen this posted anywhere on here, but Richard Illingworth won Umpire of the year at the recent ICC awards. His second trophy after also winning in 2019. Congratulations to him!

Bangladesh v Ireland

ONLY TEST (4th May - 8th May):
On-field: Aleem Dar (Pakistan) and Sharfuddoula (Bangladesh)
TV Umpire: Ahsan Raza (Pakistan)

I wonder whether this will be Aleem Dar's final Test. His debut in 2003 was also in Dhaka.

Slightly strange that neutral umpires are being used only from the 3rd ODI onwards. Perhaps this signals that from May the appointment of neutral umpires will be back to how it was pre covid?

To further back this up, I’ve read in the times of India that Nitin Menon has been appointed to the 3rd and 4th tests of the Ashes. The article also states that he’ll be joined by Dharmasena in the 3rd test and Joel Wilson in the 4th test, with Menon also being TV umpire in the 5th test.

I was wondering the same thing - will be interesting to see the appointments for England v Ireland test. It would make sense to revert back to pre-COVID appointment structure if only to ensure all officials get ODI experience in the run up to the World Cup. Would be disappointing for the English lads to not stand in the ashes if the reports are correct. Time will tell…..
