The Fourth Test between Australia and India was Bruce Oxenford's final international match, as he is retiring from the Elite Panel in April. Certainly a fitting way to end a good umpiring career, being given the opportunity to umpire a series in his home country.

Simon Taufel mentioned it in TV coverage here in Australia, where he acts as an umpire analyst.

Congratulations to Bruce on a distinguished career! I always found him a solid and dependable umpire.

I think I’m right in saying that Bruce Oxenford is currently the oldest umpire on the elite panel at 60 years old, so this announcement is not that surprising. I remember reading in Ian Gould’s autobiography how around 60 years old is the unofficial retirement age for elite umpires.

As for his replacement; I would suggest his on field partner in the Gabba test, Paul Wilson must be favourite to succeed him! From what I saw Wilson did well in the test matches he stood in.

Bangladesh v West Indies Test Series

Both Tests: Richard Illingworth (England) & Sharfuddoula (Bangladesh), TV Umpire- Gazi Sohel (Bangladesh)
Match Referee: Neeyamur Rashid Rahul (Bangladesh)

A test debut for Sharfuddoula, and interesting to see Richard Illingworth appointed in these Covid times. I’m assuming because Bangladesh have no test umpires, an exception was made for Illingworth to officiate.

It will be interesting to see who the umpires are for the India V England tests. Correct me if I’m wrong but I think india have just 1 elite umpire now - will they use some of their international panel ones or will a couple of the England guys get a game?

And the only Elite Umpire they have is very new to the role and only done a handful of test matches! Maybe we’ll see Mr Ravi as he’s still on their International Panel I believe and has stood in many Test Matches.

S Ravi isn’t on the International Panel. India have Nitin Menon on the Elite Panel, they also have C Shamshuddin on the International Panel who has been the neutral umpire in a few ODI series.

Can’t use those two for all five games?

There are 4 Indians on the International Panel, Shamshuddin, Anil Chaudhary, Virender Sharma and KN Ananthapadmanabhan.  The latter 2 having been promoted last year and have little or no international experience.

As mentioned, India are represented by Nitin Menon on the Elite Panel. I’d imagine the test matches would be umpired mostly by Menon and Shamshuddin, with maybe Chaudhary getting a test match as he’s umpired a number of limited overs games in India.

This feels a strange appointment. Given Illingworth won't have officiated since August in the UK. Surely Gaffaney being in-season in his home country and with lesser COVID risks attached coming from NZ, would have been more logical. Perhaps he didn't want to go through NZ quarantine on return.

And the NZ home season still has some time to run, whereas - with snow on the ground in the UK - Richard Illingworth is probably glad to be somewhere warm!

Congratulations to Bruce on an excellent career! I always thought him to be a steady pair of hands.

Potential replacements:

Ruchira Palliyaguruge & Paul Wilson - both have had Test Match experience pre-Covid and would presumably be near the top of the list. I persoanlly don't think either is particularly Elite Panel ready! I do think Palliyaguruge has done a decent job from what I have seen in the recent series, however I don't think either are ready for the step up.

Chirs Brown & Wayne Knights - Both made their debuts during New Zealand's home summer. Chris Brown looked very at home in the test match arena, Wayne Knights looked ok but further experience would be needed.

Adrian Holdstock - Another debutant, at the expense of Shaun George by the looks of things! I don't think he's particularly experienced currently and therefore wouldn't be my first chioce!

Ahsan Raza - Currently making his test debut and has vast experience in limited overs internationals. Selected to stand in Women's World T20 finalin front of 96,000 spectators and I reckon he would've made his test debut soon regardless of Covid-19.

Sharfuddoula - Another in the pipeline to make his debut, but again not experienced enugh for elite panel IMO.

Shaun George/Gregory Brathwaite - Neither has made their test debut as of yet, but both quite experienced. George seems to have fallen out of favour with CSA, similarly to Johan Cloete not so long ago, but always seems reliable. Brathwaite has umpired around the world and will possibly make his test debut soon with Sri Lanka scheduled to visit the Caribbean!

My choice - Ahsan Raza. Very experienced and always seems to be a solid performer. Pakistan only have 1 umpire so far, meaning it will diversify the panel further rather than a 3rd Aussie!

It will be a very interesting set of appointments. Menon isn't very experienced and 4 test matches on the trot will be heavy going. Shamshuddin is vastly experienced in limited overs and will be ready to make the step up, with Chaudhary also quite experienced with a chance to stand in a match. Sharma and Anandanathapab (sp) are far too inexperienced and will definitely not be considered for this series.

With the appointment of Illingworth as a neutral umpire in Bangladesh, I wonder if it is about to open the door to further neutral appointments. Many players/coaches have called for their return and International Cricket is really starting to pick up again around the world. The forthcoming series is vitally important in terms of WTC points so I do think it would be a mistake to appoint Menon to all 4 matches and rely too heavily on Shamshuddin and Chaudhary. The choices are either to welcome Ravi back into international cricket as he has TM experience, or to ask neutral umpires to travel. Perhaps Dharmasena and Palliyaguruge could follow the England team from Sri Lanka? Maybe Gough/Kettleborough could be asked to travel from England. No idea what the ICC will do, but it will be very interesting to see!

India V England

1st Test
Umpires: Nitin Menon and Anil Chaudhary
Third Umpire: Chettithody Shamshuddin
Match Referee: Javagal Srinath

2nd Test
Umpires: Nitin Menon and Virender Sharma
Third Umpire: Anil Chaudhary
Match Referee: Javagal Srinath

Test 3 and 4 to be confirmed

Test match debuts for Chaudhary and Sharma. Sharma has only ever umpired in two ODI’s and one T20 international before this so this is a big step up for him.

I am very surprised that Sharma has been given a test match debut. This would also suggest that it will be Indian umpires only umpiring the tests and no neutral umpires will be involved.
