Re: International Cricket Appointments

It will be interesting to see who the umpires are for the India V England tests. Correct me if I’m wrong but I think india have just 1 elite umpire now - will they use some of their international panel ones or will a couple of the England guys get a game?

It will be a very interesting set of appointments. Menon isn't very experienced and 4 test matches on the trot will be heavy going. Shamshuddin is vastly experienced in limited overs and will be ready to make the step up, with Chaudhary also quite experienced with a chance to stand in a match. Sharma and Anandanathapab (sp) are far too inexperienced and will definitely not be considered for this series.

With the appointment of Illingworth as a neutral umpire in Bangladesh, I wonder if it is about to open the door to further neutral appointments. Many players/coaches have called for their return and International Cricket is really starting to pick up again around the world. The forthcoming series is vitally important in terms of WTC points so I do think it would be a mistake to appoint Menon to all 4 matches and rely too heavily on Shamshuddin and Chaudhary. The choices are either to welcome Ravi back into international cricket as he has TM experience, or to ask neutral umpires to travel. Perhaps Dharmasena and Palliyaguruge could follow the England team from Sri Lanka? Maybe Gough/Kettleborough could be asked to travel from England. No idea what the ICC will do, but it will be very interesting to see!
