Nice bloke but i dont think Joel Wilson should be anywhere near the ashes.
After Erasmus and Dharmasena there are very few to chose from and Dharmasena has had moments in the past, which no doubt we all have.
Gaffaney and Menon are probably the best of the others if the English contingent are now ruled out after Aleem Dar retiring.

100% agree with you on Wilson. But if English umpires aren’t to be used, he surely will be appointed as there aren’t that many other candidates as you say.

Will be interesting to see how many games Raza or Holdstock get. One of them will surely get at least 1 test onfield as I don’t think it will be a good idea appointing just 4 umpires (Erasmus, Dharmasena, Gaffaney and Menon) to a 5 match series!

Dharmesena getting England is as predictable as Mallender getting T20 finals day.

I think Ahsan Raza is a very good umpire - personally would like to see him given a chance in the ashes. Of course, ToI report could be wrong and English officials could well be used!

Agree about Wilson. You could do the following…

Eng vs Ire - Raza and Holdstock (Gaffaney 3rd)
Same team do the first two Ashes games, Gaffaney on field in both.
Erasmus, dharmasena and Menon do the final three games.

English team do the WTC final.

But I imagine Wilson will get appointments.

The ICC Elite Panel is reviewed annually so ICC must be satisfied with Wilson’s performance. Therefore I think it’s safe to assume he’ll be involved in the ashes in some capacity.

Ireland v South Africa ODI Series (played at Chelmsford)

Match referee - Jeff Crowe (New Zealand)

1: Michael Gough (England) & Roly Black (Ireland); TV - Adrian Holdstock (South Africa)
2: Adrian Holdstock (South Africa) & Paul Reynolds (Ireland); Michael Gough (England)
3: Michael Gough (England) & Roly Black (Ireland); TV - Adrian Holdstock (South Africa)

I always expected English involvement in these games, but the appointments of Holdstock and Crowe definitely suggests a return to pre-Covid appointing!

England v Ireland Test Match

Referee: Richie Richardson (West Indies)
On field: Adrian Holdstock (South Africa) & Paul Wilson (Australia)
TV: Kumar Dharmasena (Sri Lanka)
4th: TBC

A further sign that pre-covid appointments are back?

Nice to see Holdstock and Wilson both stand in their first test match in England (if memory serves correctly!). Wonder if Holdstock has been given this match and will not be appointed to the ashes with Raza joining the established elite members?

I reckon with this appointment  Dharmasena will be involved in the WTC final, maybe with a couple of the English guys.

I wouldn’t at all be surprised if for the first 2 Ashes tests Erasmus and Gaffaney stand on field in both with Holdstock as TV umpire in both.

From 1 May, everything reverted to the pre co vid basis of umpire appointments. This is why the first two games in Pakistan/NZ series had no neutral umpires, and the last three games did.

With the Ashes starting just 5 days later, this appointment suggests Dharmasena & Gaffaney will be involved in the 1st test.

Congratulations to all officials appointed. Slightly surprised Erasmus isn’t involved in this one

Looks like Gaffaney and Dharmasena will be involved in the first two tests
With Erasmus probably involved in tests 3 -  5

1 Edgbaston: Marais Erasmus (South Africa) & Ahsan Raza (Pakistan); TV Chris Gaffaney (New Zealand)
2 Lord’s: Chris Gaffaney (New Zealand) & Ahsan Raza (Pakistan); TV - Marais Erasmus (South Africa)
3 Headingley: Kumar Dharmasena (Sri Lanka) & Nitin Menon (India); Joel Wilson (West Indies)
4 Old Trafford: Nitin Menon (India) & Joel Wilson (West Indies); TV - Kumar Dharmasena (Sri Lanka)

Delighted to see Raza getting an appointment to this series, surprised to see Erasmus and Gaffaney only on field once.
