Sharma is obviously very highly thought of! I really hope it goes well for him and Chaudhary. I wonder if they might consider Chaudhary and Shamshuddin together to give Menon a rest depending on how the first 2 tests go!

I do think it’s good and wise given the circumstances to see the non elite umpires get experience in test matches at the moment. However to play devils advocate, Paul Reiffel and Richard Illingworth travelled out to Dubai for the IPL and now Alex Wharf and others have travelled to Dubai for the T10 league.
Surely a Test series of the magnitude of India v England should have international umpires instead of these franchise limited over tournaments.

The Umpires for the T10 league in Dubai have so far been from England and Sri Lanka. Interestingly, Ian Gould is a Match Referee for this tournament. I wonder if he has now retired from the County Umpires list and will now be one of the ECB’s Cricket Liasion Officers/Referee?

England:
Alex Wharf
Nigel Llong
Billy Taylor
Paul Baldwin

Sri Lanka:
Lyndon Hannibal
Ranamore Martinez

Match Referee’s both from England:
Ian Gould
Chris Broad

A bit of nightmare for Anil Chaudhary in the TV umpires chair today.

First of all the Rohit Sharma stumping, for me there was nothing behind the line. Having said that it was extremely close, can somewhat forgive Chaudhary for giving him not out on that occasion.

However the Rahane catch, well what a shocking decision. Inexplicable for him not to follow the footage all the way through, if he had he would have seen it clearly came off Rahane’s glove and he would have been out.

Fortunately for England, both decisions weren’t that costly as both batsmen were dismissed soon after.

Unfortunately with home umpires, accusations of bias will come in regarding these decisions. It’s a shame I thought Chaudhary had a reasonable test debut on field in the first test, and Nitin Menon was outstanding in the first test match. Menon also let himself down today with poor decision to give Pant out caught behind, when there was clear daylight between bat and ball.

Hopefully just a one off bad day at the office for the umpires today!

I heard a rumour Lee Mason was the TV umpire...

I have to say the surface for the second test is a disgrace.
It’s so disappointing that the reputation of test cricket hits the floor when groundstaff are allowed to prepare sub standard wickets.
The deliveries shouldn’t be turning square from ball 1!

As for the tv umpiring today... what a shambles.

A poor day for Indian cricket aside from the score!

More poor umpiring today. Can someone explain how Rohit played a shot there. Thought Joe Root was going to explode when umpire said he had??

Appointments haven’t been announced yet for the next 2 test matches, I wonder if there’s a chance of neutral umpires being appointed?

I read that Illingworth or Gough are off to the PSL, Gaffaney and Reiffel went to the IPL last year. Surely if umpires can travel to domestic tournaments they can travel for such a high profile series? The problem isn’t that Menon, Chaudhary etc are from India, its that they hardly have any experience.

I haven’t actually seen any of the second test, so can’t particularly comment however, I thought Menon and Chaudhary were superb in match 1. It’s a shame to hear the team have had a challenging match in game 2.

The rest of the series poses some intriguing questions. If the plan is to appoint Indian umpires to all tests, I think it would be really unfair on Menon to have him stand in 4 back-to-back tests matches. Even umpires more experienced than he would find that incredibly challenging. If so, which two Indian umpires could stand together? Chaudhary and Shamshuddin? Or was it always the intention to have a neutral umpire in place for matches 3 & 4? If so, why not matches 1 & 2?

And to add further fuel on the fire, how the hell can neutral umpires travel for franchise leagues but not test cricket!?! Test cricket should be the pinnacle of the game, and I can see no reason for teams of umpires to travel staying in their own bubble. The officials during England’s home summer stayed in the bubble throughout the series. How is that different to elite panel umpires travelling and staying in a bubble? All very bizarre, especially when Illingworth was allowed to travel to Bangladesh!

Interesting! I think it’s a mistake having an umpire stand in 4 tests back to back under such pressure, here’s hoping Menon can deal with it, especially as it sounds like he didn’t have the best of games in match 2. Chaudhary deserves another on field appointment as he was good in the first match. Strange that Shamshuddin, the most experienced of India’s international panel doesn’t get a game? Similar happened in South Africa with Shaun George. Obviously the ICC has no plans for them going forward!

I too think it’s a mistake giving Menon all 4 test matches. It seems like the ICC want at least one elite umpire in every test match and won’t deviate from that!

It’s also been confirmed that Menon will be the on-field umpire in all three ODIs. However, his partner for each game is yet to be confirmed.

Here’s hoping the BCCI have common sense and let him have the T20 series off!
