RUGBY LEAGUE INTERNATIONAL PANELS
« on: Thu 14 Jan 2021 20:03 »
I see the RFL have submitted 3 names to the Elite International Panel whose refs will take charge of top tier fixtures and presumably will be covering the World Cup later this year. It’s a panel of 8 - 3 Aussies and 1 New Zealander have also been added to date.
Our reps are Robert Hicks, Chris Kendall and Liam Moore.
Disappointed personally not to see Ben Thaler there as I still regard him as our best ref. Kendall seems to be the favoured one at present - I am still not fully convinced - and Moore at only 25 is a bit of a surprise
The 8 Elite will be supported by a 16 strong international panel who will oversee games below the top tier and, I would suspect, may find themselves in supporting or TMO roles at the WC. There will be 3 English reps here too but names not announced yet. I suppose it’s any 3 from Thaler, Miskalauskas, Grant, Griffith and Child but who knows.

Ridiculous that Henry Perinara is on the panel. Not even on the top 6 of the NRL. Disappointing there is no place for Ben Cummins.

There seems to be a "gap" between opinions/ratings for officials in their own countries and officials on an international stage. That is the case across sports, not just rugby. Off the top of my head, some examples of inconsistencies:
Football - Faghani v Gillett: Faghani somewhere close to the top of the Australian tree after leaving Iran but Gillett languishes in EFL.
Rugby Union - how many countries outside the 6N+SA/NZ/OZ/Arg have seen their officials appointed to RWCs?
Rugby League - to a much greater extent (France & NZ won't get a look-in until the England/OZ monopoly is removed)
Cricket - the elite umpires panel "excludes" minor countries.

As for Rugby League & England's top referees, at least they are not in a country where relatives with appointing authority can determine all the appointments seemingly without challenge. But it certainly does seem that Thaler & Child have been overtaken by Kendall & Moore - on balance, deservedly although I would be interested in knowing the extent to which clubs'/coaches' opinions sway the appointers.
