European Rugby SFs
« on: Mon 12 Apr 2021 16:07 »
2/5 - La Rochelle v Leinster
1/5 - Toulouse v Bordeaux

30/4 - Leicester v Ulster
1/5 - Bath v Montpelier

About the only prediction which can be made about officials is that Leicester v Ulster will (probably) be French.
I'd guess La Rochelle v Leinster would be English, the All-French will be Irish or English & the Bath game could be anyone's (other than English/French).

I would like to see Brace on the all French game, Pearce on the other one.

Poite did well in his QF as did Murphy

I reckon that the main Final will be an all English appointment, Barnes or Pearce + Carley/Dickson.
All 4 SFs & the other Final - it should be an "open goal" for the non-represented countries' officials (Scotland, Wales & Italy) but Jutge & his colleagues will probably not gamble. For Scotland & Wales in particular, there's a dearth of proven experience at the top level.
Once again, rugby's 2 codes show football the way forward in terms of being able to hear most of the officials' conversation real-time. Doesn't necessarily mean that all rugby officiating decisions are 100% correct, but those which are obviously wrong are rarer than hens' teeth. Compare & contrast with England's Premier League & VAR week in week out.

Based on form and key decisions Raynal nor Adamson should be anywhere near the middle of these games.

Murphy did well and Poite was at his best (helped having Varnsey and CMK running the lines)

The "powers that be" definitely have their favourites (which might have been partially caused by covid-related travel restrictions) & my guess is that those favourites' positions are reinforced by captains' and coaches' feedback post-match. That feedback might not necessarily be in line with the input on websites such as this! It's certainly interesting to compare & contrast the styles of Barnes/Pearce/Carley & Poite/Gauzere/Raynal - probably the most important thing being, despite their obvious differences, each is very consistent. Similarly Brace/Murphy. I do sometimes strain to hear the officials' conversations over the commentators, hopefully the latter will remain silent when there are conversations during breaks in play involving the TMO and the on-field officials. As is usually the case when the BBC broadcast rugby league.
Whoever's appointed to whichever SF, fingers crossed that the SFs will see many more tries than the 2 all-French QFs! A PK fest will be a turn-off.

Both assistants changed in La Rochelle - Andrew Jackson and Wayne Falla replace Dickson and Makepeace (or is that Dempsey and Makepeace 😉)

So it’s La Rochelle v Toulouse and Montpellier v Leicester.

What price Pearce and Brace?

All England team for the all French final. 4 out of Barnes/Pearce/Carley/Dickson/Ridley/Foley as referee, 2 ARs & TMO - probably Pearce ahead of Barnes. Tough call for Jutge & his colleagues.
Leicester v Montpelier could be all Irish or all Scottish or all Welsh. Another tough call - if Brace is selected then that implies not enough confidence in the likes of Murphy, Adamson & Whitehouse. Unlikely to be any other nationality which is tough on the likes of Italy and Georgia.

I would like to see Pearce but suspect Barnes. Brace for Challenge cup, would like to see Adamson forgiven and used in someway, 1 poor 20 mins doesnt make him a bad referee
