Harlequins vs Exeter - Premiership Final
« on: Wed 23 Jun 2021 22:03 »
Congratulations to Matt Carley on his appointment to his first Prem final.
Assisted by Luke Pearce and Karl Dickson, with Ian Tempest in the TV truck.

I hope come 7.30pm Saturday night win or lose I will only have praise for the officiating team (Come on you Chiefs!)

Oh dear. Although I hope to be proved wrong I anticipate a stop start game refereed by a robotic authoritarian with little feel or empathy for the players. Sorry but that is the Carley style, like it or not.

Harsh but true! I tried watching the London Irish v Harlequins game on C5 recently. It was what wasn't said by the commentators (including Barnesy) early in the 2nd half when the 'Quins centre was sent off that summed things up for me. On the other hand, World Rugby / Jutge rate him sufficiently - so we just have to accept, much like the round ball game, that referees come in all shapes & sizes and some are better communicators than others.

What a game! Congrats to Quins for staying in it and coming back. Great intesity and rivalry, but all mates at the end.
Chiefs will take it on the chin and come back.

Carley was fine, no major errors, assisted well by Pearce and Dickson. Thought his communication was better today than in recent games, was quick to reward jackler but this is happening with all English refs.
Correct yellow cards following penalty try (Hill for Exeter) and after team warning (Smith for Quins) - was actually pleased to see the YC despite a try being scored.
His involvement and that of his team assisted the game and did not affect the result adversely. Well done

Credit due to the team of officials for contributing to a game which beat all expectations. Harlequins hopefully leading the way to the reduction/elimination of coaches/DORs who stifle individuals' flair when demanding "team structure" and focusing on defense. And both teams showed highest respect for their opponents and the officials - rugby needs to eliminate all of the soccer style disrespect that is becoming too common, something emanating from coaches who put results first at all costs.
