Duplicate appointments
« on: Mon 14 Jun 2021 19:38 »
I expect you all know that Arthur Kingscott refereed two games on the same day in 1893 (one was an 11am kick-off). We have another 300 examples of the same man apparently being in two places at once, mainly because the Cup appointments seem to take priority over those previously announced for League games (perhaps someone can clarify this). Anyway, one from this season that I'm sure you can fix without any problem; Robert Madley at Charlton v Portsmouth on 2nd Feb 2021, but also at Hull v Lincoln in the FL Trophy.

Regards, Tony

This takes me back.  I suspect many of us have done two games in a day when we were starting out as referees.  I sometimes did a schools game on a Saturday morning then a local league game in the afternoon.  Then another game on a Sunday morning.

It was not a regular thing for me but I knew one chap who did two games every Saturday then two every Sunday, simply because he needed the money.  He only had one set of kit!  Also, he didn't drive so relied on buses or scrounging lifts between grounds.

As I have mentioned before, I also refereed basketball and there were people who would referee almost every day, sometimes doing two games, one after the other, at a venue.  It paid quite well and some people must have been coining it!

It was not a rarity in the 1990s.  On more than one occasion I lined a South East Counties League game on a Saturday morning, then either lined of the London Spartan League or refereed a local game the same afternoon.  That was followed up with two games on the Woolwich and District Sunday League the next day as the league had "morning" and "afternoon" sections.

This can be attributed to a combination of youthful eagerness, a smooth talking appointments secretary and the timeless imbalance of supply (games) and demand (referees)

Many years later, I refereed a FL Youth under 19s game on a Saturday morning and was diverted on the way home to referee an Isthmian League game in the afternoon.  But that was to bail out an appointments secretary who realised (with horror) at about 1pm that he had a game sans a referee.  It was very much a one-off.

Just recounting the above is making me weary and in need of a lie down!

Even in my days of 'youthful eagerness' doing two games in two days was just about my legs' limit, let alone four - did three in a weekend on a handful of occasions but it was very much the exception (admittedly there's a scarcity of Saturday morning football down here, so I'd have probably done at least three more often if that weren't the case)!

I did so at youth level but the games were shorter so it wasn't so bad. Time I started in the mens league, no chance. 1 game was enough for me!
