2019 Super Cup - Historical appointment!
« on: Fri 02 Aug 2019 12:03 »
After refereeing the women's World Cup final, Stephanie Frappart will referee the Super Cup between Liverpool and Chelsea. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/49206450

I'm not sure how I feel about this. On one hand, it is certainly a big development for female officiating and you always need someone to be the first. On the other hand, the general consensus seems to be that the standard of refereeing at the women's World Cup wasn't that impressive and you'd have to ask if she is better suited to the appointment than any of the male officials who could have done the game?

I wonder if we will see more female referees officiating in the Champions/Europa League this season and perhaps even at the Euros next summer?

I think it is wonderful! I am however female and am likely to view it with a degree of female emotion and pride thrown in.

Time will tell if it is the right call but as an example Bibiana Steinhaus, a great referee in her own right, has proved that she can referee perfectly well in the men's game. Some of the top female referees are perfectly capable of doing so. I think some of the female referees from the bigger nations where the women's game is more developed are very capable, sadly the women's game is still very undeveloped in many nations & I think this was reflected in the world cup.
Hajrá Lilák. Csak a Kispest. Hajrá Magyarok! Hajrá játékvezetői csapat! Soha ne add fel. Nincs sárga kérem!!! No Chris Kavanagh doesn't live in Ashton or even in the Greater Manchester area!!

I worry that she doesn't have a great deal of top flight experience in men's football.  I read that she is in the pool of referees for Ligue 1 this coming season, so she will get that experience in time, and so maybe next year's Super Cup may have been a better appointment.  Bibiana Steinhaus, having done a full season in the Bundesliga, may have been a better choice for this particular match.

That said, I think it's great that women are getting opportunities in men's football - and I really hope it goes well for Stephanie and her team.

I too think on the one hand it's a great inspiration for women to get into refereeing, but on the other hand, find it slightly worrying given that she's never done a men's UEFA match before and yet her first will be the Super Cup. Hopefully she'll show her class and do the game justice, it just seems an unnessary risk by UEFA when giving her some exposure to UCL/EL football this season and the Super Cup next season might have been better?

I will start by saying congratulations and wish her (plus her team) a wonderful night.

However, this is equivalent to appointing Andy Madley (first year at top National level) - yes, a very competent referee, bags of potential and in time a very good international referee but not yet
UEFA has obviously decided the Super Cup is not as high on the list as previously was.

I have concerns due to experience and not gender and I know she has refereed the Womens World Cup final so has a level of standing but I think it is a step too far, too early.

This is my concern too.

I think that Michael Oliver is an excellent referee but I thought that it was right that he didn't go to the 2018 World Cup because he did not have enough relevant games at that sort of level and there were more suitable candidates for the position.

Even amongst French referees, there seem to be more appropriate candidates for this appointment who have built up experience refereeing Champions League/Europa League games.

Certainly this appointment is a surprise.

But UEFA takes a significant risk. I hope that Frappart will be able to handle the match and manage the players. After all, it's a final. And certainly there will be a lot of passion from both teams. Also we shouldn't forget that we have 2 English sides. Will she find a suitable approach to the match?

Too many questions to be answered.
