its not a case of qualifying!!!! its instead of friendlies and a competition where uefa nations are in groups with other nations based on where they are in the rankings ie 4 levels of rankings with the top being Germany Croatia etc going down to the bottom being cyprus etc the competition does have prizes which involve euro 2020

I know exactly what it's about James.  It's a standing joke, you may not have been around long enough to have been a part of. My teams are Northern Ireland and Hungary, who never qualify for anything! Euro 2016 was the first time for either of them in over 30 years and Euro 2040 something is likely to be the next time! Trust me were qualification needed we'd not be there!

It looks like Nations League will have AAR's.

Bart Vertenten from Belgium has a match on 9-11 September with AAR's.
I know that I know nothing

Most UEFA competitions seem to use AARs, including the Euros and Euro qualifiers, so it would have seemed odd if they haven't used them, considering this in some ways feeds into them.

It will be interesting to see if they persist with AARs at whatever point VAR is introduced on a widespread basis.

Not taking the mickey out of you at all. You clearly didn't understand my self deprecating joke about my team as you explained to me it wasn't a competition that needs to be qualified for, so was just trying to explain my joke to you, sorry if you felt that was offensive, I didn't mean it to be! I've had 21 lady years of being Northern Irish surrounded by English people understandably ridiculing/making jokes/taking the mick out of my little team & I just laugh & remind them I was there for that 1-0 win at Windsor Park on 7th September 2005, the peak of our glory. I accepted many years ago that we will never be a big team, half the time we don't even qualify for the qualifiers for the big tournaments, let alone the tournaments themselves! You'd think when I moved and got an adopted country I'd chose one with a decent football team but no, Hungary it is and right now they are even worse than Northern Ireland!! I think we hold the not so proud record of being the only team to lose to luxembourg, Andorra and the Faroe Islands in the space of a year, even Kazakhstan whipped our behinds. Trust me we can't even beat the other little boys so I certainly do not want to be playing the big boys - I cry once 5 have been knocked in past us!!!

I love Michael O'Neill, love what he has done with Northern Ireland and we are probably the best we will ever be with him at the helm. Euro 16 was fantastic for both my teams, just to see us there was an amazing experience. After them though it showed Herr Storck had been purely riding on the crest of a wave started by the awesome Dardai Pal & was not that good of a manager once the Euro's were over & he had to work it alone as opposed to finishing what Dardai Pal had started. Leekens was an era that I want to forget - it lasted just 4 games but it was 4 games too long, none of us wanted him but the MLSz for some inexplicable reason did! We all wanted Rossi & now we have him so I am really excited for the Nations League - we won't be one of the big boys but we will at least have our pride restored! Hajrá Magyarok. Forza Marco!

I will add there is a huge advantage to supporting a rubbish small team, on the rare occasion we do actually qualify for one of these tournaments it is just a party for as long we stay. Our fans literally just party and sing from the minute it starts to long after it has ended. We don't care about the results because we don't expect to win. We can't believe our luck just being there & being on the same stage as some of the big boys. A lot of my England supporting friends enjoyed our games more because of how our fans were, goal down - get another whiskey/palinká in and carry on singing, laughing and enjoying every second of it, win, lose or draw. For the big teams like England there is an expectation to win, an expectation to proceed beyond the group stage and beyond that into the last however many as the Ivory Towers keep tinkering with the numbers and the huge disappointment if it doesn't happen.  I watch my England supporting friends so stressed about results and progression in the tournaments and cannot understand how they can enjoy that - I would hate it. I thought England were fantastic in the World Cup, they did themselves & England proud & I'm delighted the fans enjoyed it for the great achievement it was. That delight is a taste of how just qualifying feels for us.

I hope so. It's a good tournament and deserves the best referees. I'm sure in the earlier stages some of the younger/inexperienced refs will take the bigger games - Turpin from France as well as Taylor/Oliver. It might on paper be a friendly tournament but I'm pretty sure the teams will be taking it seriously. I can't wait for it to start.

Now don't you be telling me both my teams qualified, that will be excitement overload!

Saturday is going to be a very drunken day with my 2 epic teams playing straight after each other. I get roughly 1 hour 15 mins recovery in between games - just enough time to swap out the whiskey for the palinká! For some bizarre reason I have got Hungary down for a 2-1 win in the MLSz prediction league - I must be completely barking! We get to find out tomorrow which poor 2 referees have to try and not make me cry!! Some decent refs already named for the Thursday & Friday games.
