Indeed quite a change! Thought he had a very good game though.

Quite an incident packed evening in the EL, interestingly there were (to my knowledge) three OFR after which the referee either did not follow VAR advice or stuck with their initial decision. While I don't think all of them were correct, it does IMO speak to the confidence referees seem to have in UEFA competitions to back themselves over VAR which we doesn't seem to be the case in the EPL.

The OFR incidents for those who might be interested -

Maccabi Tel Aviv - Shakhtar Donetsk OFR , Referee is François Letexier -

I think in this case VAR was incorrect to intervene, nothing clear and obvious here in fact for me definitely no penalty good call by Letexier to back himself over his vastly more experienced VAR Clement Turpin.

LOSC Lille  - AFC Ajax, Referee is Ivan Kružliak -

I am torn on this incident, for me it is no penalty but I'm not sure if it is an obvious enough mistake for VAR to intervene. I think maybe one can back Kružliak and I can see why he stuck with a penalty but for me play on is a better choice.

FC Salzburg  - Villarreal CF, Referee is Andris Treimanis -

Simply an unacceptable mistake. I cannot offer any defence as to why a RC isn't issued, to miss the RC in real time is bad enough but to issue yellow after OFR...IMO a very poor decision from a referee I had heard good things about previously. I wonder how this will impact on his progress, hopefully he can recover.

IMO, the first one the referee was correct to stick with his decision.

Second I think is an incredibly harsh penalty. Striker looks like he's on his way down before any contact is made, which it also looks like he initiates.

Third is just inexcusable why that's not a red card.

Attwell/Tierney and Kavanagh/Pawson two regular teams are appointed to VAR this midweek in UEL. Actually I expect third, Betts and Massey should have been paired separately with Kavanagh/Pawson. A Madley and Coote should join regular var team next season.

The big guns at Arsenal which is unsurprising. Zwayer with a weird match, not a stand out tie in the slightest IMO.  Other ties in this group of matches could be more challenging.

Collum and Ekberg with important observers, and Visser with virtually a dead rubber.

Oh and Riley appointed as an observer....  :o

Are VAR officials remaining in their home country to officiate the match? If not, why are English officials not being appointed as ref? Also, how come Scottish officials are travelling if English ones aren’t?

I wanted to know the same, however I guess they are at stockley Park or the uefa equivalent here in England. I think the reason Scottish officials are travelling as their rules are different I think. Could someone confirm this please.

Collum with a committee member observing. Possibly a test for his Elite status?

Massa gets a very open match confirming that a promotion is more than probable. Zwayer gets an dead rubber match with Villareal being on the front seat. The Arsenal - Benfica tie has, as expected, a big name.

I think Zwayer's appointment does nothing to quell any concerns he may not be going to EUROS or indeed may face demotion in the future.

Collum's observer is interesting, perhaps he still has some chance for EUROS? Or maybe a last chance to be saved from demotion? Or perhaps just a coincidental appointment.

Visser with a dead rubber as you say but a much deserved KO debut IMO. I saw him officiate a ROI game last year and at just 31 I feel he has the potential for a big future ahead. I wish him the best of luck with this appointment.

I wonder if there was a late change of officials in Rome given Beaton is 4O and there are English VAR assistants appointed.

That would suggest a Scottish team was taking that game?

Apparently Madden was appointed but his regular AR2 was tested positive and the whole team was replaced.
