ENGLAND - GERMANY
Referee: Danny Makkelie (NED)
Assistant Referee 1: Hessel Steegstra (NED)
Assistant Referee 2: Jan de Vries (NED)
Fourth Official: Sander Van Der Eijk (NED)
Video Assistant Referee:
Assistant Video Assistant Referee:
UEFA Referee Observer: Christopher Lautier (MLT)
UEFA Delegate: Eduard Dervishaj Nelaj (ESP)
Referee Liaison Officer: Adam Kenton (ENG)

I only saw the 2nd half of this and what a 45 minutes it was. I thought Danny Makkelie was superb, always in control, used VAR as it should be, played a super advantage when England broke out of midfield and generally contributed to an exciting half. (PS. Am I alone in thinking that he he looks just like Arnold Shwarzenegger as 'The Terminator'?!)

He's certainly fit and I'm sure many of us ladies, and maybe also some men, will most certainly classify him as hot but not sure he resembles Arni, who imho is not hot! Nice physique - not overly muscular, not an ounce of fat on him though - I reckon his body fat is probably as low as 10-12. Handsome and an absolutely gorgeous smile <--- very important feature!  He's not quite Filip Glova hot but I'd put him at #2 on my totty list! Let's hope he (and Filip come to think of it...) doesn't read RTR

In terms of refereeing, he is a phenomenal referee. Easily top 2/3 in the world. Amazes me that he puts in masterclass after masterclass and 9/10 makes it look so easy. His man management is superb, he leads matches, so so good, the only one who comes close to him in man management terms is István. Can't be easy when you are at the very top to continue to maintain above expected levels of performances match after match, that level of pressure must be immense and speaks volumes about his character.  He's getting some stick elsewhere over the 2 OFR stating he should have spotted them in real time, well imo the first one the attacker looks for the contact so he can go down & I can understand why he played on, 2nd one the stamp to the foot would have been on his blindside, the player was obscuring his view and I don't believe he has developed X-ray vision yet, if he has he will be like the terminator! He wasn't quite at his peak best last night but when your not the best is still superb, it says it all really about him as a referee.

Imagine him whistling his matches in police uniform 😛

Top refs are always respected, even when they make mistakes. That’s how we recognize the best.

I think Edy would send us both to the naughty step permanently for that thought alone!

He is superb, but I suspect he will be kicking himself for missing the two penalties real time and needing VAR to rule him out.  The Maguire one in particular was very clear and I was amazed he waved it away, especially as he appeared to have a clear view.  That must have been the fastest VAR pitch side screen check in history, he barely glanced at it, so obvious was the foul.  He obviously hasn't watched any Man Utd games as if he had he would know what was coming after Maguire mis-controls, misplaces a pass and then tries to make amends 😂

I could read the dissapointment on Makkelie’s face. He is not standing a lot in front of that VAR screen. It’s okay to raise critics, but I was a bit shocked by some indiscriminate critics on a particular ref blog. Some people seem to enjoy it to burn down referees. In general, critics are always more harsh and straightforward when a top flight referee makes a mistake. Easy targets, for some reason… It stands out because they rarely make a mistake.

Regarding the OFR’s, from a refereeing perspective we can talk about two missed PK’s. From a (man-)management perspective, I think it was good to award those PK’s after OFR. It’s easier to sell the 1st PK decision against England in a packed Wembley after rewatching the incident. And I noticed that the German defender - the one that conceded that 2nd Pk - was still moaning after the game, FFS!

I thought the German was very lucky to only get a yellow, it was a straight leg above the ankle, I appreciate the force was minimal and it was an accident which probably on balance justifies the yellow call but to debate it was a penalty was just utterly ridiculous.

Yes, borderline situation. Player was unlucky, no intention to hurt the English. The force could justify a YC (no loaded studs). To be fair, as a neutral viewer I’d hate a red card (double punishment) there. Not sensible from a control/management perspective imo. Especially in the context of this fair game; until that moments no cards, and with England already relegated nothing at stake. A yellow fitted perfectly in the full picture and was also fully accepted by both teams.

I hope Croatia are wearing their white dishcloth home kits (instead of the army blue away kit). Otherwise BMB needs her sunglasses 😎🟡🟡🟡🟡🟡
