A considerable number of VAR interventions last night if the BT highlights are anything to go by, and a number of overturned decisions including Makkelie at Athletico Madrid. I wonder what Mr Riley made of that one. Most interventions seemed justified although, once more, we had a 'Euro penalty award' for hands which was outrageous - ball hammered from no great distance towards the defender who was turning his back and had his hands by his side.

The one in Danny's game was a great intervention. No way he could have seen the attacker initiated the contact in real time, it was on his blindside. That was a perfect example of how VAR should work. One in István's game as well, he'd booked an attacked for a dive but after VAR intervention and an OFR he rescinded the yellow & gave the penalty.

Oh yes.

I’m sooo glad that VAR Dennis Higler invited Danny Makkelie to re-view the incident. Just imagine, in case VAR supported the on-field decision, I’m pretty sure there would be a “step-on-achilles” image on the front page of the Spanish newspapers. That would create some damage for Makkelie, who (I agree with bmb) in full speed couldn’t assess this properly. Now, they punished the ”first” and “most severe” foul. Expected decision. 1000% agree.

Imo a great advertisement for the existence of VAR (!) and great teamwork. UEFA should be happy.

Mostly normal appointments.

Orsato and Massa with big matches. Gozubuyuk is back on CL after a long time. Zwayer for PSG at home and Jovanovic on the other match of the Group.

Unexpected and big appointment for Sanchez Martinez. The Spanish is far from convincing and this match could be a hot one.

Not so big match for Makkelie. Taylor with Barcelona's last chance. Oliver and Turpin for Group B. Atletico does create some trouble to the committee.

Low kew match for Meier. This match should go to a 1st Group referee.

That’s a big fourth official appointment for Jones too.

Meier with an important observer, but as stated, a 1st group official would have been appropriate.

Great game for Taylor, especially as it's a must win game for Barcelona, and a pretty big game for Oliver too.  Looking at the table in group D, although not as high profile as Taylor's game, that's still an important game for Makkelie.

Oliver in Belgium will be fine for him. It’s not that big of a game at all.

Wondering how he will travel to Belgium. From experience of travelling to Bruges. It isn’t well connected by plane. Nearest airport with flight to UK is Brussels. That’s an hour away. Long travel times for Oliver. Perhaps a private plane to a closer airport?

Oliver's been fine - quite a niggly game where it's difficult to shine, but can't thing of anything he got wrong.  Two minor things - he did blow too early for a foul in the first half with a Bruges player through on goal, and a questionable lack of injury time in the second half (not that it mattered) despite a number of VAR checks.  He was ably assisted by Kavanagh, who had a busy time of it at the start of the second half - with recommending a review for Michael for a penalty which ended up being awarded (Michael had his back turned when it happened), and then he spotted encroachment at the penalty leading to a retake.   Good night all round for the English team.

Looking forward to seeing the other team in action shortly, in a game which now has little riding on it thanks to Inter's result.

Taylor was OK, a couple of missed decisions on corners, Beswick had a non-offside decision overturned, and Anthony had a penalty overturned.  Not horrendous decisions originally, but correctly overturned.  Adam Nunn made some excellent tight calls on offsides (or not offside in some cases).

Big controversy is at Tottenham, where there is a lot of debate over whether VAR should have ruled out Kane's goal.  I'd need another look at it to decide but it looked very tight.  Conte rightly sent off for his OTT reaction.
