I recall that many (many)years ago, UEFA decided that European Cup Finals should not be refereed by officials from the country in which the match was to be played. The reason given was that it placed extra pressure on the referee. When was this ruling abandoned?

No idea, but what a ludicrous ruling!

Referee: Clément Turpin (France)
Assistants: Nicolas Danos, Cyril Gringore (both France)
4th official: Benoît Bastien (France)
VAR: Jérôme Brisard (France)
VAR Assistants: Willy Delajod (France), Massimiliano Irrati (Italy), Filippo Meli (Italy)

Think this is a totally unfair appointment. I wouldn't have thought that Turpin was in the top 5 in performance scores for the competition but gets the final because its in his home country!! Still what do I know about UEFA politics. Feel sorry for those that worked harder and performed better but were overlooked because they are not French.

No idea either, but it came about because in days of old, the Final was automatically given to a ref from the host nation (subject to participating teams), and a referee from Greece made a complete hash of a Final in Athens (? involving Celtic?) and the rule was changed to one involving performance rather than location. I don't have strong views on this issue, but I have to say I don't think Turpin merits being in charge this year.

The match involving the Greek referee took place in Thessaloniki on 1973. It was a Milan vs Leeds final of today's UCL. The referee was late Christos Michas from Athens.

I do not get the anger or disappointment directed to Turpin. The final is never about the best referee getting the game very few if any referees have had multiple UCL finals. No one is complaining that Collina or Merk didn’t get 3 each.

Wonder what colour Kit he will be in tomorrow. In the last 4 UCL finals the referee has worn the dreaded yellow. In 17/18 the referee wore yellow and in 18/19 with red white combination. However, last season both referees wore blue.
