And thats why they get the games. Safe hands, minimum of fuss, in/out job done
All things being equal, fitness, health and a dose of luck both should "go deep" into Euro 2020 (2021)
More than happy to see either on England games, esp vs Scotland

Incredible matches for both referees last night, very very challenging (particularly for Kuipers).

It would take a long time to write a full analysis and one finds themselves at a lose at where to start. Cakir with the incredible VAR sequence, Kuipers with an extremely challenging ET.

On the whole I think both did very very well. Technically some mistakes but to keep full control at all times is to their credit, I think many referees would have lost control of both matches, especially Juve - Porto in ET.

Looking at the big incidents in both games -

Cakir VAR sequence - I'd advise everyone to watch this, very complicated scenario lots of points to take from it. From the replays I saw no clear and obvious mistake to disallow the goal, but Cakir was shown some other angles it seemed. Clear PK for Dortmund before this, difficult to detect as Cakir was likely looking at the cross so correct to award a penalty here and disallow the goal after OFR IMO. Obviously the re take correct and I thought he handled the afters very well with two correct YC.

Maybe VAR Irrati could have avoided a lot of controversy by simply allowing the first goal or even better if he had intervened before the goal was scored to advise Cakir about the penalty. Tough choices though and technically I think he was totally correct.

Second penalty he awarded also correct IMO.

Kuipers - Porto penalty IMO quite soft but not wrong. For me no penalty but no way VAR should intervene. I think Juventus had a very good penalty claim when the goalkeeper challenged Ronaldo. For me this was a penalty but again probably not VAR stuff (but close). Finally the red card was fine for me and all other penalty claims were correctly judge IMO.

On the whole I think while they didn't get everything right both Cakir and Kuipers showed why, even in the twilight of their international careers, they are two of Europe's best, strong, composed and calm at all times.

Irrati seems to cause chaos and confusion regularly when he occupies the VAR role.. so I’m not in the least bit surprised he has unnecessarily got involved.

I hope Slavko Vincic has to improved remarkably in 3 years to have any chance of referring at the Euros. He ruined my trip to Athens with the clarets. Completely changed the game with his odd second half decisions. Rumours that the owner went in at half time to see the ref. Shocking performance.  Uefa had to appoint Kassai to the 2nd leg  because of it.

Of no relevance but I went to that game - week before school started after the summer holidays! He wore black! Andó-Szabó was 4O, the beautiful Ring György and Tóth Vencel as AR. Got pick sausage, a bottle of sour cherry pálinka, 2 tubes of paprika paste, tub of sweet paprika & a bottle of tokaj wine at the hotel at lunchtime! No idea what the score was, I only remember the relevant information! ;D

If Holland do not progress well in EUROs I can see Makkellie joining Kuipers in the QF/SF stages of the competition (likely 4th in final if they want all from same nation)

Is it possible to have 2 Romanians in Euro?

Normally I would say no, but with Rosetti you never know.....

Interesting indeed. I wonder had Hategan not had the Paris incident what the state of play would be, I thought that his EL appointment last week meant he was fully back, now I wonder is there any possibility only Kovacs will attend EURO? Surely not....

As for two going, well I assume the general principle is that referees appointed to the CL knockout stage will attend? If so then I guess Kovacs has a good chance (I think this is an important observer?). It will be interesting to see how Hategan is appointed in coming rounds.

Also I am not yet totally convinced by Kovacs, only 5 CL games so far (I think) and while I think he has talent and a good future I think maybe he lacks experience. I would be interested how others rate him?

I've been following him since his liga 2 days. For an ethnic Hungarian to rise the way he has in Romania is rare & a testament to the hard work put in by Kyros Vassaras and Alexandru Deaconu into ridding the referee department of xenophobia and enforcing true diversity and equal opportunities.  What they have achieved there cannot be underestimated. It is HUGE! His appointment is not a token one either, he has got there by a lot of hard work and as he has risen up the ranks with a lot of support from his fellow referees and the referee committees there. Hategan in particular has been very supportive. His brother Szabolcs has fairly recently made his Liga 1 debut and is another promising talent. Considering the standard of domestic football in Romania, and I do not mean that disrespectfully, it is a similar standard to Hungary/Serbia/Slovakia for any referee from those regions to go from refereeing in a domestic league akin to conference to top league 1/lower championship level to refereeing National teams is a huge leap in standards. Any referee achieving this has my respect. Domestically clubs are starting to accept him, again partially down to the 'kick it out' work of Kyros and Alex, fans however don't. He faces a horrendous barrage of abuse every single game just because he is ethnic Hungarian, the racial/xenophobic slurs chanted for 90 mins are sickening and it is a testament to his character how he copes with it and continues to work hard and keep improving. I felt physically sick watching him referee the Bucharest derby just prior to him being promoted to the elite category, the abuse was non stop and he was pelted with coins/lighters etc every time he was near a touchline. I don't need to speak Romanian to understand the slurs, I have been to enough Hungary v Romania national team games to know what they are and yes the Hungarian ultras are just as bad towards Romanians as the Romanians are to Hungarians! I hate it, I wish it would end & I fully support our President in the MLSZ who is trying to rid it on our side as well as Kyros & Alex's work to do so.  I'm a huge fan of Kovács, he's not the finished article, he continues to improve but I do think he is ready for the big stage. I was delighted when he was promoted.

Oh how I hope so!

Technically speaking though it would be 1 Transylvanian Romanian & 1 ethnic Hungarian Romanian! That would be a HUGE achievement.

Thank you bmb for that fantastic insight. I would like to think I am relatively knowledgeable about refereeing matters but it just goes to show the amazing challenges some officials can face totally unbeknown to us, I would expect most fans watching his CL/EL games will have no idea the struggles he has overcome to get there.

My comments earlier perhaps didn't fully reflect my position on Kovacs so just to clarify, I think his R16 appointment is deserved, I think he is a good referee with talent as I said but I do question if he is ready for EURO. Again I appreciate that he has ability but like you say bmb he is not the finished article.

A very good sign for Kovacs IMO.

He also has an important observer so if things go well, he looks a very likely candidate and yes, two Romanian officials could be on the cards.

I didn’t expect Karasev on the city game, and I think he is still a 50/50 shot for the Euros.
Not sure however if the observer is important for him? I’m sure Edy could clarify for us all.

Orsato with a standard appointment given the state of the tie.
