I'd be interested if Edy, TTFL or anyone else knowledgeable on matters European think there is any chance of Cakir being demoted? It seems that Palabıyık is heading for elite to replace Cakir - I had thought this would be for when Cakir comes off the FIFA list but could this happen sooner? His appointments of late haven't been so great and we all know of his (imo ridiculous) "suspension". Surely though his elite spot is safe?

What I’m not sure about is whether Turkey can have two elite officials in their standings with UEFA.

I very much doubt Cakir will be demoted, there are many many elite officials who are well below him in the pecking order and no match in the ability stakes.

Kralovec and Sidiropoulos are at a risk IMO.

Can’t understand why Kralovec is still elite?? How many CL games has he had in the last 4 years? If he is always injured then his position isn’t justified!

I certainly agree there are many officials below him - although not his best period, I still think he definitely in the top 10 in Europe. My doubt though is along the lines you speak of - can Turkey have 2 elite referees. If not then I wonder if there is a slight chance he will be demoted but, like you, I doubt it. Surely it is planned he will attend Euro 2021 which Palabıyık even if promoted now surely would not.

Thanks for your reply - when are we expecting the categories?

Of course Cakir won't be demoted, even though, it is said that Ceferin is angry with him. I believe that he will retire after EURO 2021 and be replaced with Palabiyik. The latter is being pushed atm and seems to have committee's trust.

Hategan writes history with his 5th (!) CL appointment. Also Makkelie with his 4th appointment. Both are considered as safe pair of hands and locks for the Euro.

Stieler with an important match. The German will be Elite soon.

I agree with TTFL about Kralovec and Sidiropoulos. They should be demoted. I would add Collum as a demotion candidate.

No appointments announced for Wednesday's games yet?  Is there a problem selecting appropriate teams of officials due to the virus, or is it just a slightly later announcement than normal?

They would only be announced (publicly at least) today anyway so they're not late yet!  There are certainly some virus related issues and travel restrictions that really are not helpful right now!

Thanks as always for the very informative post Edy. Indeed it will be interesting to see the changes in categories. It is a shame about Sidiropoulos, I think he had a lot of potential to be a top referee but he seems not to have reached that level, domestic matters probably don't help.

Fantastic appointment for Frappart with an important observer.

Collum gets a shoot out for the Europa League in Group E. Orsato and Lahoz with expected appointments given the games.

I have to say I think Frappart’s appointment is largely political and unfair on other officials.

I also think we may see Frappart at Euros next year, if so I don’t feel this is fair either.

Let me be clear - I am not in any way questioning Frappart’s ability, I am fully in favour of having the best referees appointed be it a man or a woman it shouldn’t make any difference, however there is no question there are many referees who were surely ahead of Frappart in terms of experience (and possibly ability) for a CL debut. In other words 2 EL games before a CL debut....I wonder how regularly this has happened! (Open to correction!)

Again I hope this post isn’t taken in the wrong spirit, I have no issue with Frappart being appointed to even a CL final at some stage in the future - I just feel every referee should have to follow a similar path and not overtake others ahead of them for, what I feel, are purely political reasons.

Is the opposite route available to men? Or are all the appointments in the Womens CL female? If not, should it not be one list?

Fairness and equality are things to strive for. This appointment, based on the number and profile of the games done, is neither of these.

Football has always been political and 'face-fits' appointments are nothing new.
