Olympic football referees
« on: Mon 26 Jul 2021 20:42 »
Does anyone know where I can find who is refereeing in Japan. I have yet to find a single name in tv coverage or match reports. FIFA said they published a list but it was absent from my coverage. Does the subject not merit a mention here?

I am most impressed by and very grateful for the answers here. They provided all the information I was seeking. Thanks.
I was surprised to find no GB refs on he list. Presumably because we are not taking part? I should have thought our neutrality would be a bonus. And better than those I have seem so far!

Why would you automatically assume a GB ref would be there?? The appointment are done by FIFA. All the male refs are on the list for the 2022 World Cup.

I don't know who the ref or VAR were but excellent use of VAR to deny Spain a penalty in the Olympic semi-final v hosts Japan. A fair tackle by Yoshida resulted in Merino going to ground in the penalty area and a penalty awarded, but a review confirmed that the tackle was fair and Merino had gone to ground after accidentally kicking Yoshida in the follow through. Penalty cancelled, yellow card withdrawn and smiles seen suggesting that VAR was correct. Well done VAR!

Australian referee Chris Beath will referee the gold medal final at Tokyo 2020. 🥇

He will be assisted by Anton Shchetinin and George Lakrindis, also from Australia 🇦🇺

4th official is Portoguese Artur Soares Dias 🇵🇹

Well done, all! ⚽

I know the Aussies come under Asia now but it still pleasing to see FIFA move away from the norm. I hope they all have great games

Great news for the Aussie trio.
Not sure what you mean by the norm RCG, the Rio final was refereed by another AFC referee Alireza Fagahni. Who now referee's in the Australian A-League. Maybe this is the new norm. Just give the Olympic final to an Aussie referee????

RCG- Ron Wright (Great name for a referee) refereed the Gold medal match at the 1956 Olympic Games. Alex Glasgow, who became a FIFA Assistant Referee refereed the Gold Medal match at the 2000 Paralympic Gold Medal match.
