I find it odd that Sergei Ivanov was appointed to referee a match involving two countries (Slovania vs Cyprus) in the same group as Russia.  I appreciate that the outcome could not in any way affect Russia's standing in the group, that a very large number of appointments had to be made in this double round of fixtures and that there are still problems with Covid-related travel restrictions, but even so, I would have thought that somebody more obviously neutral could have found somewhere.

I’m sure he won’t be wearing yellow then with your presence in the ground! 😂😂😂

He's still grounded from the last time so he'd better not!  I'll be rifling through his bags when he arrives to see if he has it & burning it if he does!!

Northern Ireland in Green, Italy probably in white? Perfect combo for the yellow 😂😂😂😂

Black!

Hungarian team out on the same matchday, they could have easily swapped them with no arising travel issues.  It's unfair on him to put him in that position, even though it could not affect the outcome there is always someone out there looking for any reason to try and raise an integrity issue or similar rubbish.

bmb it looked like a game that did not pose Kovács any major difficulty from what I saw? I really hope that he gets a more challenging big game soon. I feel this will be necessary for him to make the transition to the 'elite of the elite' so to speak. It was suggested by Chefren on Law5 that this game might have that effect but I think the committee will, reasonably, want to see him in a more high profile more challenging fixture.

I can report that Bognar did well in LUX-IRE. He was VERY firm with his body language in terms of dissent early on and the players soon got the message. All yellows he gave looked good to me.

Agree but is standard practice (also at CL level) for years.

I thought he was outstanding. Top performance from him, he looked relaxed, happy and was thoroughly enjoying the game. I don't recall any dissent his way, certainly nothing that saw yet another player added to the bmb hit list! Decision making fair and consistent, fitness outstanding as ever & he got his positioning spot on.  The latter imo is still his weak point, particularly when he comes off his diagonal closer to his AR, he sometimes ends up getting a bit too close - he aced it on Monday.  He's really been working hard on it & it shows. One of the commentators, I think ESPN, kept praising him especially about his great rapport with the players and his "outstanding man management".  Cue a beam of pride from bmb! There was a drop ball after the ball had hit him, Flanagan obviously didn't know the LOTG and István was calmly explaining it to him, Flanagan just really didn't get it and so he explained to the captain, who moved Flanagan away, and also seemed to understand what was being said, Flanagan came back and said something, not sure what but judging by the brief look on István's face it was nothing good! The commentator bloke sat there said "the referee just said to Flanagan "please be careful", (I could not see that) we assume he means of his language. What excellent refereeing" then went on to sing his praises for a few minutes! He was saying he had real empathy, his man management was exceptional. I want to get a recording of it so I can listen to it properly but he was really loving my boy & I was sat with a grin so wide hearing it. In the hospitality afterwards I spoke to one of my Uncles who is an ex pro player, played for Linfield (amongst others) and has 1 NI cap, he asked me if if the wee ref was a favourite of mine and without waiting for an answer said that he was the best referee that he had seen at Windsor Park and he was welcome back anytime. He's 72 so has seen a lot of referees in his time. I did my best cheshire cat expression again!! So happy for him and very proud of him. WP was absolutely rocking!

I half watched Tamás - I was watching Portugal v Serbia with a bunch of Serbs (digitally) - zoom is great for watching football together when you are spread across Hungary, Northern Ireland, Serbia and Latvia but want to be together for a match still!! I was happy with what I saw but I can't say I was concentrating too well so thank you for that feedback. It's good to know he has not lost his confidence after the disgraceful scenes after the Red Star Belgrade game. Well done Tamás & Hajrá Serbia!

Kovacs in Belfast! Excitement on the south coast methinks!

Important observers for Bastien and Hernandez Hernandez. Treimanis with a dead rubber.

Bastien looked tiny, a bit like a schoolboy refereeing an adult match! I was reminded of Will Finnie at Gresty Road a couple of seasons ago. The decision by Treimanis to award Albania a late match-winning penalty was ludicrous, and why the VAR (L Visser of Belgium) did not intervene, I do not know. Dead rubber it may have been but that was no excuse for the award.

bmb will be off to Northern Ireland methinks!!!

Whereas I had thought she had been allowed to hand-pick Hungary's referee herself for totty-watch purposes, based on her previous comments.

Just as purely random no-one wants to know but I'm going to tell you anyway fact... Filip Glova is from Košice in Slovakia - pre Trianon that would have been Kassa, Hungary! Yes Kassa as in Kassai!! That explains it!

UEFA have called a EGM for tomorrow to discuss the situation in Ukraine.

We pray for all those caught up in this vicious, unwarranted and despicable act by Russia.

I really don't get what they see in Siebert. But he appears to be the blue eyed boy in UEFA terms

Craig Pawson as AVAR, was unaware he was used in this role. Mike Riley is a Fifa assessor?

Finals will go to Taylor, Orsarto and one other
