I thought the penalty was stonewall, he was holding and pulling him for ages.  I think he was lucky for a second time not to see a red card.  I think he correctly turned down the penalty claim for O'Donnell's alleged handball as he was fouled right before it.  He was correct in law not to give the penalty for Hanley's push as ball not in play.  Thought some of the fouls were a bit strange both ways, none more so than the handball one he gave Austria at the end.  And you are quite correct the tackle on McGregor should have been a straight red.  Whilst I agree with the penalty decision I didn't think he was up to much and certainly not as good as the two referees we had last week.  From a Motherwell perspective, proud as punch with Stephen O'Donnell again!

Blast from the 90's with 3 former PL referees as assessors in Steven Lodge, Mike Riley & Neale Barry

Any ideas why Andy Madley is doing AVAR rather than a specialist AR?

Another awful performance. Looked like a rabbit in headlights with the mass con. Does not convince at all. And this is supposed to be the future of German refereeing!

Wednesday 8th September 2021

Group B
20:45 CET - Athens (Olympic Athletic Center "Spyros Louis")
GREECE - SWEDEN
Referee: Sergei Karasev (RUS)
Assistant Referee 1: Igor Demeshko (RUS)
Assistant Referee 2: Maksim Gavrilin (RUS)
Fourth Official: Kirill Levnikov (RUS)
Video Assistant Referee: Vitaliy Meshkov (RUS)
Assistant Video Assistant Referee: Sergei Ivanov (RUS)
FIFA Referee Assessor: Konrad Plautz (AUT)
FIFA Match Commissioner: Armen Minasyan (ARM)

Good performance by Karasev yesterday. He was very lenient in foul detection with a few mistakes on the 2nd half. Disciplinay control was very good and all cautions spot-on.

He had to deal with 2 interesting situations:

12' Karasev whistles a penalty for Greece but AR2 flags for offside. VAR confirms the offside.

74' Greece scores the 2-0. AR1 flags for offside. VAR confirms the goal.

The only negative is the big delay by VAR (Meshkov) on the 2-0 by Greece. Meshkov was checking the offside call for about 5' before finally changing the decision to goal.

Definitely UEFA won't be satisfied with that.

Does the observer report on the VAR officials as well as the on field officials?
Given that it is Plautz and if they do, it definitely isn’t good news for Meshkov.

I see Conmebol have a VAR observer - maybe we see that too (esp if VAR is remote)

Oh goody - more jobs for the boys!

The more match officials, observers and assessors that are appointed to the top games sucks the refereeing resources away from the grass roots of the game.  It also lowers the standard at the top and devalues the achievements of those reaching the very top versus those reaching the same status in years gone by.

I am told that he does report on the VAR officials. Not sure if he gives them a mark but there is a section on the UEFA report for VAR officials.

Big appointment for Aytekin. This match could determine the PO spot.

Weak match for Oliver, even worse for Sidiropoulos. MLT-SVN could go to a First Group referee or even a Second Group one.

Yes it's a very good for Madley. Especially for his debut on National teams.

A very good debut for Madley, I think he will be a lot happier than Oliver who has a poor game.

I am frankly surprised that Cakir has not been taken off this game (I assume appointment was made before the events in Milan) hopefully this means that the committee back him as they should because for me he had quite a good performance. Any issues with the penalty at the end were with the VAR, who, as has been pointed out on Law 5, has been replaced for this game.
