Interesting that UEFA are taking this stance when last year they wouldn’t allow English officials to referee CL KO stage games as they don’t have VAR, but this year every country is being deployed one !

I think it is just about practicalities.

Last year, it was only the Champions League knockout stage that used VAR so it made sense to use a small pool of referees that had plenty of experience with VAR.

This year, VAR is more settled into UEFA competitions and they've needed more referees to cover using it across the CL group stages and now in the EL knockout stage too. Presumably they've had more training and guidance in the past 12 months too, as well as the chance (for some of them) to use it in other tournaments such as U21. At some point, you've got to give people the experience - it just didn't especially make sense to do that right away last year.

Never heard so much tripe. Why do you continuously defend things cannot he defended? UEFA continuously moving the goalposts to suit their own agenda stinks of hypocrisy! They need to be called out!!

What agenda? Why can't it be defended?

It makes perfect sense to me.

UEFA initially planned to introduce VAR to the CL from the group stages of this season, as that would enable them to have time to train up the referees, have them attend seminars, give them relevant directives, etc.

It was decided last season that they had a small group of referees, who used VAR in their own domestic leagues and many of whom had used it at the 2018 World Cup, who could be used if they introduced VAR for the knockout stages of that competition. The consequence of that was that the likes of Taylor and Oliver, as well as a few other fairly experienced referees from other countries (who, unlike Taylor/Oliver, had officiated at a major international tournament) such as Hategan, Collum and Kassai also weren't used as they prioritised the referees/VARs who had the most experience.

They were obviously going to increase the pool of referees and VARs they used eventually because otherwise they would not logistically have enough officials to cover the games now VAR has essentially been introduced full-time.

I really don't see what your problem is.

Good game for Zwayer. And maybe the final KO game for Aytekin who has been past it for many years

I don't think that Aytekin faces a danger of demotion. There are stronger candidates.

Don’t know much about gozubuyuk the Dutch official but very good tonight in the United v Bruges game. Correct to
Spot a clear handball block.
The only thing is: why was he called over to have a look at the monitor when it was clearly a penalty and red card. Would like to see him again!

Good games all round. Zwayer with perhaps the big game of the round!
Any reason why Karasev and grinfeld were replaced?

In Grinfeld's case presumably Israel's very strict isolation rules, similarly the Italian VAR team at Wolfsberg.
