IMO Oliver still pays the Real-Juve QF. It was a silly decision to appoint him on that match since he was clearly not ready. UEFA doesn't want their referees to create fuss.

Taylor has been really impressive those last months. He surely has Rosetti's trust and I think that he may be a candidate for a Final already.

Please enlighten me if I'm wrong edy, but what fuss was there that Michael Oliver caused in this particular game? IMO he refereed the game to a very good standard and got the KMI right at the end spot on. The only fuss was caused by raging footballers wrongly abusing a match official for making a correct decision.
Whether he was 'ready' is of course another debate to be had, and I agree Oliver has far more years ahead of him. But to put Taylor as a favourite for a final is really kind of laughable (IMO)!

Perhaps the 'fuss' was awarding the penalty in the first place although the decision was subsequently deemed to be correct by Collina as I recall.  Of course, had Oliver 'ducked' the decision, then isn't it likely Real Madrid might have created a 'fuss'?  Can't help thinking if another referee had made the same penalty decision and sent off Buffon, he might have been applauded for it.

I have no problem with posters expressing an opinion criticising an English referee in European games but it would be appreciated if they could also mention when the same referee has a decent performance.  From what I've read and seen, Oliver has done just that on several occasions.

That said, I can understand why UEFA might like Taylor's style of refereeing, but also why PGMOL could now prefer Oliver. (I think it was Whistleblower who commented on this a few months ago). It should also be pointed out that Oliver has had some decent FIFA appointments.  I'd accept Taylor going to the Euros if Oliver gets the World Cup appointment.

Fuss? I would say he made a personally credible decision that many people regarded as being correct and received death threats because of it. I certainly don't think it's something that should be affecting his career almost 18 months on. Skomina gave a worse performance in a Man City game last season and there was a fair amount of fuss after the PSG V Man Utd game but he got the CL final.

IMO, Taylor simply suits better to the UEFA style of refereeing. Always focused, quickly making (big) decisions, firmer presence and less error-prone than Oliver so far what could be the most important factor. I already wrote that somewhere that Oliver is clearly ahead of Taylor in Premier League but it's the other way round in UEFA. In addition, Oliver has much time to develope in UEFA (34yo) while Taylor is already 41yo.

An interesting summary. In terms of styles, I guess I would say Taylor's is more similar to Webb's and Oliver's is more similar to Clattenburg's. I always slightly preferred Clattenburg to Webb and equally slightly prefer Oliver to Taylor although much of that is just personal preference.

I didn't comment on the decision but that decision created the media and fans outrage. It reminded me the Cakir/Nani incident on the 2012-13 season. A decision which wasn't clear for UEFA (it was incoclusive even on the next RAP) and yet Cakir missed the CL final as a result of that. His observer had backed him on the report (Collina again) but that was his last appointment for that season.

And I didn't make Taylor favorite for a final. I merely suggested that UEFA might have big plans for him.
I know that I know nothing

Stieler with an important observer to his game. I guess they’ll only be at most one English representative in Europe this week given Attwell and Tierney are VAR to Collum.

Stuart has a Europa League match (in Turkey). Craig Pawson is in France

When would they normally fly out to a Thursday evening game?

Ekberg under the Dallas radar, and Kovacs with an important observer too.

Fairly routine games for Kuipers and Skomina.

Not worth a separate thread in my view, but I thought Clement Turpin had a good game at Tottenham last night. Pity the Spurs defence couldn't have been the same!  :(

I didn't see anything of the Man City game but Peter Walton, reporting in The Times, suggested that Man City should have had two first half penalties via VAR. The first was when Theophile-Catherine hung out his arm and clearly handled Mendy's cross and the second was when Peric missed a tackle on Aguero and stood on the striker's foot. The first incident appeared to be missed by VAR and 'inexplicably' (in PW's view), VAR did not intervene in the second.
