When was the last time a Spanish referee officiated the Champions League final come to think of it?

Was it in 2005?

(i know that Spanish teams have been in a lot of finals since.)

2005 - Manuel Mejuto González
1996 - Manuel Díaz Vega
1969 - José María Ortiz de Mendíbil

Thanks.

It seems surprising Spain have only had one referee do the CL final in the 21st century considering Switzerland (quite rightly) have had two. (I know there are more Spanish than Swiss teams doing well in Europe!)

I was also surprised by how long it was since France had a referee do the fianl and indeed the fact that there'd been no Swedish referee doing it since the 1980s (I can think of at least three who I'd have said were good enough to do it.)

Looking through the list, I'd say Orsato was probably the weakest to be appointed to a final since the mid 2000s - quite rare for a referee to get the final without having refereed at a Euros or World Cup first (I guess happened with Clattenburg just about although he went on to do the Euro 2016 final and had done CL semi-finals previously so was clearly at that sort of level.)

I am sure you will mean Peter Fjordfeldt among that lot. A superb referee who always seemed to have great respect from the players. When you think he never had the Final and yet someone like Orsato has then it perhaps shows the dearth of good officials today or the plethora of good ones in years past.  Or both

Of course it's true that it is human nature to have preconceptions and influences on our opinions, and many people will be more forgiving of an error by someone we generally regard in a positive light compared to someone we rate less. We should do our best to be as open-minded as possible but I'm sure pretty much all of us have certain biases, however sub-conscious - even you!

Hey Readingfan an example of my bias... My most disliked referee (well joint most disliked with Vad at least) Ferenc Karakó refereed my team at the weekend, a game in which we lost 3-2, had a penalty given against us and 2 players sent off.  Quote from my NBI thread.

Onto Mr Karakó. Many mistakes first half but only one at the hands of team ref! Csatári Tibor with a dreadful offside call against Felcsút. Judging how dodgy my Lilák's defence has been I'll happily take it!! Pajovic back in goal so we are down to 10 men as it is. A bunch of NBIII teenagers managed to knock one passed him within 5 mins & he nearly gifted them a 2nd one a few mins later - thankfully 1 defender was awake and cleared it off the line.  Hope Banai will be back soon.  Yellow card for Burekovic - who is living proof that you can't cure stupid. Every single week he is this dumb and rightly gets booked. Red card for Stieber - utter stupidity. There was a foul on Stieber & Mr Karakó blew for the foul, while both players were still on the floor, Stieber raked his studs down the Felcsút players calf and kicked him right over. Good spot from Mr Karakó who quite rightly sent him off. It's 1-1 at half time, my team are down to 10, well 9 as Pajovic is in goal and struggling against a bunch of teenagers from 2 leagues below!  Felcsút have had to field their teenagers from the NBIII team because of the positive covid-19 tests, the MLSZ refused to allow them to also postpone this game, they have already postponed 2.

It didn't improve none. Lilák need to hang their heads in shame, out played & outclassed by a group of kids who play 2 leagues lower. 3-2 defeat in the end.

Mr Karokó continued to have a good game. Penalty against my Lilák spot on. Vincent can add his name to the idiots list. Some child going away from goal towards the byline and right before he runs out of the pen area Vincent decides to bowl him over & give a dumb pen away - just why?? Then just before the end Burekovic strikes again - not on goal that would be too much to hope for! Just in case we missed his can't cure stupid moment in the first half he had another one, earned himself a 2nd yellow and therefore a red. Not sure why he was screaming at Mr Karakó, there was only one person in the wrong and it wasn't Mr Karakó! Shame Mr Karakó had run out of cards to give him at that point, at least he is banned next match! If someone could just drop Pajovic & Burekovic the Serb side of the border before midnight when they close I'd be ever so grateful - please and thank you!
Hajrá Lilák. Csak a Kispest. Hajrá Magyarok! Hajrá játékvezetői csapat! Soha ne add fel. Nincs sárga kérem!!! No Chris Kavanagh doesn't live in Ashton or even in the Greater Manchester area!!
