If one of the French teams get through, it would rule out Turpin and there is still the possibility of the Final being awarded to someone who's already had it.
Could Lahoz still be in with a shout despite having a SF?

I'll leave edy and others to advise on who might be regarded as 'senior' and in form of Orsato, Makkelie, Taylor and Hategan.

In terms of seniority I think it goes from the year they joined FIFA but it could be the year they were promoted to elite which would in a way make more sense. In terms of longevity on the list as a whole Hategan would be the most senior.

Hategan 2008
Orsato 2010
Makkelie 2011
Taylor 2013

As mentioned by Greeny, Makkelie has the Europa League final so he is now ruled out.

As for who is in form - not a clue! The very little European football I watch the refs are all 2nd category at most, normally 3rd! I know them better than the elite group!

Daniele Orsato (ITA), Danny Makkelie (NED), Szymon Marciniak (POL), Anthony Taylor (ENG), Clément Turpin (FRA).

One of these for the final?

I would rule out Marcinak.

Does the fact that working with VAR week in, week out rule out Hategan?

Romania, like Hungary, use the Saudi League for VAR experience for their elite refs.  Hategan did around 6 games there last season (as in 19/20) as referee and normally while there they do a 2nd game as VAR as well to also get that experience.  He also had at least 1 appointment in the King's Cup there as well as the 6 in the domestic league which is another VAR game under his belt.

They actually often do 3 games whilst there - one as ref, one as 4O and one as VAR so they get the VAR experience from all 3 positions. At least our refs from Hungary do and I would assume it's the same for Hategan and Kovács from Romania. The Saudi League are very accomodating in that regard mainly because they get a lot of foreign elite refs doing their domestic games which helps them preventing similar allegations the Russian league is blighted with!

Another final for Irrati!

UEFA obviously not as bothered about penalty encroachment as FIFA seem to be!

I'm not really convinced by Orsato. I think Rocchi was a level above and Rizolli/Rossetti several - not even to mention Collina!

would have it been possible to have Taylor/Oliver for the final as an alternative to orsato?

To use Readings analogy at the moment Taylor is above Oliver in UEFAs eyes but is a step below where Clattenburg was and a distance to Howard Webb

When was the last time a Spanish referee officiated the Champions League final come to think of it?

Was it in 2005?

(i know that Spanish teams have been in a lot of finals since.)

Wasn’t 2005 Kim Milten Nielsen for the Liverpool v Milan game?
