Interesting to muse on how UEFA view "perceived" errors given that that has been talk on here about how Michael Oliver's appointments may have been affected after the Real-Juventus game. I watched the Schaktar - Atalanta game last night, and witnessed Felix Zwayer inexcusably fail to issue a second yellow card to the Atalanta player Muriel. It was a potentially game changing moment with the score at 0-0. Given that Zwayer is seemingly one of Rossetti's favoured Elite refs, I await with interest the appointment s for the knockout stage of  the CL.

Oliver had 3 appointments in the CL Group matches in Lyon, Barcelona and Moscow so it's not as if he's been ignored.  And I'm not aware of any great controversy in any of those games although there were a lot of YCs in one of them as I recall.  Taylor has had 4 matches, some more high profile, so I accept that he is seen by UEFA  / Rossetti as the slightly more accomplished referee at the moment.  It's unfortunate perhaps that it was an Italian team that were involved in that Real Madrid game, although the consensus on here and with former English International referees was that the penalty and red card were correct.

Oliver has more years to develop further so it will be interesting to follow their respective careers with UEFA, FIFA and the PL.

I didn't see the game last night but shall look for Herr Zwayer's future appointments.

Michael Oliver has Atalanta V Valencia on Wednesday. Burt and Bennett assistants, with Atkinson Fourth Official. Interestingly, Kavanagh is VAR and Pawson is AVAR - I think previously it has been the other way round?

Cakir has Spurs V Leipzig.

I wonder if Marciniak is under the radar of Rosetti for a big semi final or indeed Europa League Final. Oliver with an important ex committee observer.

I would expect Brych and Taylor to be involved in some of the reverse fixtures.

Tbh Marciniak is one of my favourite FIFA referees but considering his performances over the last 6-12 months I think he can count himself lucky to have such a good appointment

Will be interesting to see how the English officials use VAR in Europe, with different directives.

They used it in the group stages of the CL of course - Taylor used the monitors a few times I think.

Saw most of Oliver's game.  No major problems that I noted although there were signs of it getting a bit tetchy towards the end.
The 2 main VAR referrals were a possible offside for Atalanta's 4th goal and a check for a penalty for handball by an Atalanta defender but both onfield decisions stood. The Valencia players were frustrated they didn't get the penalty but the replays were not all that clear. To me it didn't look like handball.

It was good to see Oliver talking to players and until the penalty incident there was little dissent.

Decision making seemed sound and the AR's did well with a couple of close offsides.

Only 1 YC I think for a pull-back near the touchline by an Atalanta player.  They did commit more fouls than Valencia but I can't say I noticed PI by any one player.

I don't think there was anything for Oliver and his team to lose sleep over but as a non-referee I'd be happy to read any other opinions.

I agree with most of Ref Fan's post. Oliver had a good/expected level performance on a Normal difficulty match.

His decision making was good (only a couple of fouls missed plus a YC around 81-82). He had control of the match despite the excessive dissent at VAL penalty appeal (No handball, Oliver awarded an attacker's foul -> correct IMO).

The biggest issue was the 4-0. IMO, the offside is punishable even though the player in offside position doesn't come in contact with the ball.

The only point for improvement would be his positioning (too close to the ball at times, no diagonal movement).
I know that I know nothing

Thanks edy.

There were a few early fouls which enabled Michael Oliver to show some authority and then there was a period when there were very few infringements or the tempo allowed advantage to be played.  Overall, it was an entertaining game with plenty of attempts and just a few spells when play was a bit scrappy.

I can't recall the missed YC edy mentions but there were several what struck me as 'tactical' fouls by Atalanta in the last 10 minutes who no doubt were anxious not to concede a second goal to Valencia which could have changed the balance of the tie.

Interesting point about positioning. I've noticed in the P/L this season that not just Oliver but other senior refs such as Atkinson and Taylor have sometimes appeared too close to the ball.  I did wonder whether in trying to read the play and anticipate where a pass would go, referees have moved towards the middle of the field
expecting a pass for example to the far side of the pitch where the AR is only to find the player in possession has reversed play and moved towards the nearside.  I'm probably wrong and haven't explained it very well anyway!
