Juan Martinez Munuera: Real Madrid v Atletico
« on: Sun 22 Mar 2026 22:41 »
Straight red card for Valverde in the second half. How on earth was this not overturned by VAR??

A straight red for Fede Valverde has Real Madrid down to 10 men πŸŸ₯ The twists and turns keep coming in this game πŸ‘€ π‘ƒπ‘Ÿπ‘’π‘ π‘’π‘›π‘‘π‘’π‘‘ 𝑏𝑦 @sbk | 18+ | π‘ƒπ‘™π‘’π‘Ž...

I think a red is harsh but Valverde seems to just kick him with no intention of winning the ball...commentary mentioned the two players involved had history and I'm guessing they were referring to this

Also I believe the ref was Munuera Montero not Martinez Munuera.

I wouldn’t say he kicked him like say Harry Wilson did against Denmark. Deliberately fouled him yes, but they are routinely only given as yellow. That’s a good point and may have been in the back of the referee’s mind

I suspect the referee was too close and has seen something that just didn't happen.  Although that doesn't explain why VAR didn't recommend a review, I can only assume the referee explained it as exactly what happened and that wouldn't really give VAR anywhere to go.
