Peter Bankes - Arsenal v Man City (EFL Cup Final)
« on: Sun 22 Mar 2026 17:23 »
Bankes, thoroughly deserving of this appointment, is having a good game.

He is displaying exemplary control, not falling for some of the gamesmanship (I could use another word, but I’ll refrain for now) and is trying to let the game flow where possible.

The two yellow cards given thus far were nailed on and I hope that Peter Bankes can finish off the job during the rest of the game. What is rather tiresome is the contesting of virtually every single decision, which is a blight on modern day football. But Bankes is in good control and is giving what he sees without fear or favour.

One of the most improved referees operating in the top flight and has had a very sound season.

hi,

very cagey first half as you would probably expect. hincapie YC seemed very harsh, especially when bernardo silva has made at least 3 nasty challenges and has got off scott free

regards

gnr

Sometimes I think we’ve seen referees that are maybe taken aback by the occasion and performances aren’t always excellent.

But… Peter Bankes has been excellent as he has been pretty much all season.

Thought Hincapie’s YC was harsh but not necessarily wrong. Looked worse in real time than on the replay so I understand why yellow was given.

Silva must be close to a YC for accumulation of fouls. He must only have a couple more.

Overall, very impressive thus far.

Good o’l Banksey. Spoke with him this morning, and he was laidback as ever.

Smashing the game so far. Agree the Hincapie caution was harsh on replay, but not necessarily wrong.

Absolutely 100%. I think that’s the best display I’ve seen at Wembley for some time.

Quality of the highest order from Peter Bankes and his season continues to go from strength to strength. He can expect important matches in the run in.

Not impressed with first half. Second half better but random and haphazard foul detection.  It my god what a boring game. Surely this is the worst pl season in terms of excitement and quality there’s ever been

You can pass on to him from a fellow Scouser (albeit I support the other Liverpool to him) that I thought he was brilliant today. Not the easiest game to officiate, but he looked natural and composed in the middle.

I hope the powers that be recognise this and that he progresses to be a feature in the middle for UEFA and FIFA fixtures in the near future.

He’s too old for that now, unfortunately. He did have a brief stint with a FIFA badge, but gave it up

Back when Bankes was an SG2 I took a trip to Griffin Park, Brentford v Bristol City, as I was on holiday in London. The game itself was excellent but all 3 of us that went came away unimpressed with the referee’s performance, expecting a better standard than we were used to witnessing in League 1. Upon returning home we discovered the referee was Peter Bankes. 4 days later back at Valley Parade, we followed our standard ritual of purchasing a programme and checking who the referee was. Peter Bankes again, and again a below par display!

Due to this I was surprised at his promotion to SG1, but I’ve been so impressed with him this season. Very deserving of today’s opportunity and he smashed it, well done!
