Barrow v Bradford called off by Tom Nield at 2pm. I haven’t seen any footage, but sounds like both managers think it could have been played.

Not quite sure why the dumb emoticon has been placed on the OP for League 2 appointments.

Possibly a mistake. It is very easy to click an emoticon in error and unless rectified at once you can't change.

I wasn't at the Rovers v Stockport game and accept it's easier to dish out the plaudits after a comfortable win, but heard a lot of positive comment about Alex Chilowicz's officiating yesterday.

From a City viewpoint thought Mr Madley had a reasonable game, though wouldn't argue with the above points about positioning and time-keeping. The latter mitigated by the YC for Chelsea keeper Petrovic for time-wasting around the hour mark, which did bring an end to the long-winded goal-kicks. I would like to see more SG1 officials to clamp down on this earlier.

Mr Madley let a few things go, which didn't come back to bite him. It felt inconsistent in letting Caceido already on a YC off without booking for taking a man down on the edge of the visitors penalty area, yet booking Silva for his first foul, for what looked like nothing more than a coming together in the middle of the park.

Haven't seen the VAR incidents again so can't evaluate. Don't know if something's been lost in translation, but Rodri's remarks on VAR seemed very strange; having a number of referrals doesn't guarantee any initial decision will be wrong.

Tranmere Rovers FC  v Morecambe FC
Referee: Speedie, Benjamin
Assistant Referee: Woodward, Daniel
Assistant Referee: Simpson, Joe
Fourth Official: Joyce, Ross
7 YCs, 5 of which went to the home team, in a game which was mostly played in good spirit felt excessive. Of those 5, 2 for mis-timed challenges and one for a shirt-tug were understandable, one against Morris was presumably for dissent after the far-side AR Joe Simpson? flagged for a free-kick which wasn't obvious. The last was for a Saunders challenge on the Morecambe keeper who'd taken the ball out of the area seemed harsh. One of the two YCs to Morecambe was for a blatant pull back on Apter who'd broken free, can't recall the other. The penalty award when Saunders was taken out running into the box didn't merit a YC in Mr Speedie's view. A bit out of sync with his general approach to card production in this game.
There was one situation where I felt he applied the rules wrongly. Mr Speedie got in the way of a clearance from a Morecambe player who was placed about 3' from the penalty area when  striking the ball and it deflected to a Tranmere player. Correctly a drop ball to Morecambe, but the referee didn't drop the ball where struck but took it right back to the penalty box, so the keeper was able to kick back into the box, pick it up and take a long kick.
Overall would say it was an adequate performance from the referee, no key errors, but I don't see much evidence of instinct or empathy in his handling of either game I've seen Mr Speedie officiate in.

General Discussion / Re: John Brooks - Man City vs Everton
« on: Sat 10 Feb 2024 22:47 »
While the ball is there to be won for the first challenge on Ederson, even if Godfrey went in stronger than usually deemed appropriate, the little kick out while Ederson was on the deck did seem worthy of a second look and a bit surprised Michael Oliver on VAR felt otherwise.

Generally Mr Brooks had a reasonable game, if inclined to give Everton free-kicks for minimal contact, which they milked a bit. Minor quibble over his time-keeping, Ederson's treatment after the above incident took nearly 3 minutes in itself, add on some time-wasting and at least 4 if not 5 rather than the 3 allowed seemed apt. Yet 10 added in the second half seemed generous. I liked the way he was receptive to flagging from the ARs, couldn't merit the interventions on the near side, but Mr Howson on the far line was just in front of me and made a couple of good calls.

Given previous remarks on Mr Brooks not being particularly pally with the players I was looking out for this today. While not being as chatty as some officials, his style was far from robotic and he was alert to injuries and other things happening on the pitch and his chosen level of engagement appeared to work well.

Rovers also got Mr Busby for our trip
to Doncaster. Again on the face of it not a game calling for an SG2 official. Wonder has he done many SG2 games recently if been absent for a while might be easing back.
On what I’ve seen of him in action can’t imagine a glut of RCs.

Not seen the game so relying on some of my friends watching it, and they reliably inform me that Brentford’s Neal Maupay and Manchester City’s Kyle Walker have been involved in an angry war of words on the pitch, something to do with Walker’s private life which has been in the news recently.

Maupay was subbed before any nonsense could occur post match and I don’t think we’ll hear the last of it. Jarred Gillett would have been on the case anyway I would hazard a guess.

In relation to Gillett, only six fouls and one yellow card awarded all evening, which must be some sort of record for the lowest number of fouls given in a game. Nice to see the Australian referee getting a good run of games and he’ll likely be involved in the next round of fixtures.

The only quibble was when Ederson came charging out of his box and took out a Brentford player. In the box, VAR comes in and gives a penalty.

Gillett gave nothing which was really bizarre.

Aside from that, it was a walk in the park for him, plus to mention Mr Cann again getting everything spot on.
Haven't watched the game yet, but from the photographs of the Ederson incident any contact was outside the penalty area as you say. The commentary I heard suggested Ederson knocked his own player Ake, who went into Pinnock as a result.

Tranmere Rovers FC (First Team) v Crewe Alexandra FC (First Team)
Football League 2
Referee: Brook, Carl
Assistant Referee: Clayton, Alan
Assistant Referee: Gratton, Danny
Fourth Official: Mulraine, Kevin

A very inconsistent performance yesterday. He seem to give the slightest bit of contact every time, where other referees will play on. One decision I found baffling was booking our #8 for handball. So, Crewe have a shot and it hits a Tranmere player on his arm and no penalty was given. Tranmere clear it, and it bounces in front of our #8 and hits his hand. He evidently didn’t mean to do it yet still gets booked for it? Other than that, a very lacklustre game and no one deserved to win!
I'd agree with the inconsistency assessment, but thought Mr Brook let quite a lot go and it was 27 minutes before he gave a free-kick award Rovers way. Then towards the end of the game he was giving absolutely everything to Tranmere, a few of those decisions I'd file under generous.
The penalty shout was at the opposite end and impossible to tell from my vantage point, opposite end of the ground at the side. Thought the YC for the Crewe 8 was harsh, ball seemed to hit on his body initially then bounced onto his arm. Also having stopped the play when Connor Wood was caught by an elbow in the face, strangely restarted with a drop-ball to Rovers although Crewe in possession when he blew up.
To illustrate the current different expectation levels of the two sides, a lot of the fans on our forums thought it was a good game...

General Discussion / Re: Ed Duckworth - Charlton v Derby
« on: Sun 04 Feb 2024 15:25 »
I haven't seen any footage of this game and have only seen Mr Duckworth in action once this season; did better than I expected, but that was in the context of some of the negativity here on his elevation to the FL list.

My query is exactly how do you define a "manufactured referee"?

It's clear from googling some of the links about him and his cricketing sister, which TTJs previous post alerted me to, that Mr Duckworth has refereeing since his schooldays, so has been involved in the game for a good time.

Also curious how different things irritate different people. I've never particularly noticed the military arm movement from the two more experienced officials mentioned, but can't say it would trouble me at all.

The last time I saw Mr Brook at Prenton Park was the season opener v Walsall after fans were allowed back post-covid. A rather inconsistent showing in terms of foul detection and cautions, capped by a very harsh red card for Chris Merrie, although an appeal was rejected. High spot was Mike Dean coming out of the crowd to do FO duties for 15 minutes after one of the ARs got injured.
Mr Brook mostly attracts praise on here, so hoping that the Walsall game was an off day and he has a good game.

It’s been a little surprising to me that Howard Webb and PGMOLhave been so reticent in using Mr Bramall for Prem games. Maybe his assured handling of this game will act as a reminder.

You have to love(!) the way the players just stood there watching and did absolutely nothing to help. They should all also be suspended for a game or 2...

Perhaps the idiotic "jobsworth" action of David Spain some years ago contributed to their inaction.

No idea who that is or the incident. What happened?
Mr Spain was the referee who sent the Dorchester Town player-manager off for rugby tackling a pitch invader.
While not on all fours with the dreadful incident at Vale Park today, I have heard similar to SuffolkRef about advice given to players in such situations.

One of the most memorable games that sticks in my mind was when Attwell refereed us against Bolton in the FA Cup 2011.

Definitely ranks in the top five of underwhelming performances I’ve ever seen.

Yes, and I'm sure it's why I've never rated Attwell to this day

This - sort of - makes my point.

Disclaimer:  This is not a criticism of any RTR contributor, just using the comment as a piece of evidence.[/i]

We all (me included) base our starting opinion of a referee on previous experience - as the above comment perfectly illustrates.  It is hard to approach a referees' performance with a positive outlook when previous encounters have been less than satisfactory.  Equally, referees where previous encounters have been more agreeable start with a positive outlook.

That is OK for RTR commentators, but match observers / assessors / etc. need to discard previous experiences and judge only what they see in the match in question.  I hope this is what they do, but am not 100% sure this is the case.  Unconscious bias is hard to spot and even harder to discard.
I'd agree with the general sentiment of this.

Don't recall seeing Mr Ward running the line, but it may be that he was so good at that there was nothing to notice.

My first sight of Mr Ward in the middle was in 2007, which was early into his FL refereeing career, Doncaster v Tranmere and it was not an auspicious start, where the threshold for what merited a foul and a caution was unclear, culminating in a harsh RC for Tremarco for a ball-winning 2-footed challenge. Perhaps Mr Ward was ahead of his time in that respect, these days it might earn red, but back then a player would feel hard done to getting a YC.

Since that game, every time Mr Ward gets appointed  to a Rovers game always start with an expectation that he'll be just like that below par first time again. He doesn't get many northern games, don't recall seeing him live since, but a few times on IFollow. He's mostly been ok, always better than that first game, yet still that element of pre-judgement lingers...
