I am very surprised to see Seb Stockbridge appointed to Crewe v Wrexham, a MASSIVE game for him. This is the second Crewe derby this season - refereeing Port Vale v Crewe earlier this season in the carabao cup.
How much of a derby is it and is there much history/bad feeling between the teams?
The games between Rovers and Wrexham, the closest thing we’ve got to a derby now had Messrs Woods and Oldham in the middle. Given Wrexham are already promoted, it’s not a fixture I’d expect a SG1/2 to be brought in for.
That said there are some strange appointments. Unsure why the game at Harrogate needs an SG2 for example.
David Rock at Tranmere, not seen him in the middle since our NL days.

General Discussion / Re: Bournemouth v Man Utd - T Harrington

Never been convinced by Harrington no where near good enough for the premier league imo and barely for sg2 , I think he’s a run of the mill national list referee . Always has a controversial decision in him and I think he enjoys the limelight a bit too much . Today was a pretty standard performance from him I will leave it to others if they think that standard is good enough.

Very unfair opinion on his general performances imo. He was the best referee before he got injured last year and was getting consistent TV games/ good games from September to November. He's also been very good since he's returned this season, however his last 2 have clearly left a lot to be desired. However the above comments on his general showings are not warranted.
Better than Messrs Oliver or Taylor? A surprising claim to make.
I've only seen highights of this game, so can't assess Mr Harrington's overall performance, but not convinced on either penalty call, though the second correctly overturned.

Steve Dunn is the former referee that Mr Swabey reminds me of in appearance.

Did Brooks have city recently ?
Think Everton at home in February was the last time.

No surprise to see Oliver on the Man City game.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Tierney was on track for the final now… although I think Hooper would be deserving of such a gesture.
Mr Tierney did last year's final

It feels strange that there are fewer triallist referees now that there are more games with less depending on them to cut their teeth on. Maybe they're required for key fixtures lower down?

Seen Mr Swabey in action twice. The first was ok, bit of a debate about penalties given or not. The other was this season Sutton v Tranmere which was one of the best refereeing performances I’d seen this season. Didn’t put a foot wrong, tried to let the game breathe, but clamped down at once on a spot of handbags and didn’t let it escalate.
Hope I’ve not jinxed him now!

I did look up the match details while waiting for your report, Whistleblower and saw 8YCs to players and the red for someone on the Barnsley bench. Were the onfield yellows reasonable calls? It sounds a little different from Mr Speedie's game management in the two Rovers games I've seen him in the middle for. In one where two YCs were produced early, in the first 15 minutes, was thinking that we might not end with a full compliment of players on the pitch, but he eased off and in the other a steady stream of YCs throughout.

Can’t comment about Mr Jackson in today’s game, but he awarded a very harsh handball penalty in the Oldham v Altrincham game I saw him officiate in.

General Discussion / Re: Benjamin Speedie

Both matches I've watched Mr Speedie this season, he didn't make any major mistakes but neither did he appear to have much empathy for the game. He seemed to produce more YCs than the circumstances of both merited. Hopefully your experience will be more positive.

It will be fascinating to see if Mr Taylor adopts a similar approach of minimal card use in the Man Utd v Liverpool game as he adopted last weekend and if so, will he be able to carry it off successfully again.

Tranmere Rovers FC (First Team) v Colchester United FC (First Team)
Referee: Tallis, Scott
Assistant Referee: Guest, Danny
Assistant Referee: Forder, Jack

I was a little apprehensive about this appointment, as while the only time I'd seen Mr Tallis in action previously, he was fine, he was in the middle for Rovers v Salford earlier in the season and seemed to attract a fair amount of negative comment. In particular that game was very stop-start due to a lot of fouls given for minimal contact.
Pleased to report than in that regard there was nothing to worry about, Mr Tallis tried to let the game flow and played a few good advantages, one for Colchester's Anderson early in the first half leading to an effort on goal. He was correct to produce the YC for a couple of cynical challenges on Robbie Apter and don't think there could be any argument for 5 of the 6 he produced. It was unclear why Colchester's Hall picked up a YC for an incident involving a Colchester goal-kick. Two decisions which seemed mistakes, a free-kick given Rovers' way initially but quickly rectified, maybe a word in his ear and a goal-kick for Colchester, when even their players believed it was a corner. However over 99+ minutes that's reasonable and Mr Tallis' handling of the game contributed to an entertaining match.

Good to hear, I had one eye on the game on iFollow and agree he seemed to keep on top of things well. Tranmere probably a little unlucky not to come away with all 3 points but a needed 1 for us with FGR and Sutton winning!
I'd class it as a good game for the neutral with Mr Tallis playing his part in that. Rovers edged the first half, but Colchester ahead in the second. Think you'll gather enough points to just stay up, but it will be nailbiting.

General Discussion / Re: A Taylor - Man City V Arsenal
« on: Mon 01 Apr 2024 14:15 »
I tend to agree with the last couple of posts. A decent game from Mr Taylor and despite the lack of cards for fouls, he kept the game well under control. However, can wonder might it have been a better spectacle if he had produced some YCs for the first half rash of cynical challenges.

Bradford City FC (First Team) v Tranmere Rovers FC (First Team)
Football League 2

A fairly meaningless lower mid table clash is ideal for a triallist at FL level. While a bug prevented my attendance in person, IFollow came to the rescue. Generally, I felt Mr Watkins had a good game, kept up with play and positioned himself well, a couple of decent advantages and nothing much in the way of flash-points to stamp down on. Perhaps he gave free-kicks to Bradford's Kavanagh for minimal contact too easily and some might have produced a second yellow for Rovers' Norris high boot making contact with an opponent's head albeit the player hit was out of his line of vision. The best of 3 triallists I've seen in the middle for Rovers this season.
