General Discussion / Re: Peter Bankes: West Ham v Aston Villa
« on: Fri 04 Dec 2020 19:01 »
I remain totally confused 😳

Hardly a Langford match passes without damning criticism on this site. We can’t all be wrong surely and yet those who run SG2 keep giving him decent games.
I have asked before and I find myself asking again........what do they see in him?? I remain baffled and clearly many others on this site do too.

Anyone know who’s reffing Villa v Newcastle this Friday?

Is the opposite route available to men? Or are all the appointments in the Womens CL female? If not, should it not be one list?

Fairness and equality are things to strive for. This appointment, based on the number and profile of the games done, is neither of these.

Football has always been political and 'face-fits' appointments are nothing new.

Indeed, look no further than Stuart Attwell........

I see James Linington has a nice long trip to Preston on Saturday.  And it's Tier 1 to Tier 3, so no Restaurants open if you're hungry after the game James.
Hope you've found a good hotel somewhere not too distant that serves food.  Or it's a take-away I'm afraid.

Wonder if they might give him a PL 4th official appointment for the Sunday on his way home. Seems a heck of a way to go just to referee  mid table clash between 2 mediocre sides ( with all due Respect)

Will Klopp receive a similar sanction as Bilic for approaching and querying the officials on the pitch at the end?

NO

Liverpool for one on the wrong end of VAR decisions today - all I hasten to add correct ones too.
A spiked interview by Klopp complaint about various things afterwards and Jordan Henderson saying he would scrap VAR. How the leopard has changed its spots all of a sudden!
What goes round come round

Non Footy Appointments / Re: Super League Grand Final
« on: Tue 24 Nov 2020 20:27 »
I am sure Kendall had it last year and was less than impressive.
He and Moore seem to be Gansons blue eyed boys at present, with the likes of Hicks, Child and Thaler suddenly being side-lined somewhat.
I understand Moore is 25 and Kendall not much older, so is this a deliberate ploy from Ganson to reduce the age of referees? Experience should still count for a lot.  If this trend continues how long before a 14 year old is appointed to a Wembley Final?

General Discussion / Re: New Select Group System Needed?
« on: Tue 24 Nov 2020 20:04 »
Sorry if this is a boring over talked about topic but I had some thoughts I'd be interested to see what others think.

I've been thinking recently about Michael Oliver and his large volume of games.

If the PGMOL continue to manage Michael Oliver in this manner I think it is inevitable that his European performances will be affected. I think they should strongly consider implementing a different set of protocols (if they don't already have them) for appointing referees who are operating internationally.

Something along the lines of one match week out of five totally off and at least one with only a VAR/FO appointment. Maybe there are some issues with employment law and being fair to others but I think if the PGMOL want to give their officials a better chance to perform well internationally then they need to make a change.

Perhaps some kind of merging of SG1 and SG2 would leave more options to rest referees. I don't know a lot about SG2 referees  and I hope someone will correct me if I'm incorrect but I don't see why the likes of Gillett, Robinson, Whitestone, Brooks for example could not take charge of some low key PL games.

So what I would propose is something similar to the elite development group that UEFA had but formalise it. Where the format could be -

SG1: Primarily PL and occasionally lower
SG1 Development: Primarily Championship but also take a minimum of 5 PL games each season and VAR duties in PL
SG2: Primarily Championship and occasionally lower
SG2 Development: Primarily FL but also take a minimum of 5 Championship games a season also could become involved in VAR
National Panel: Primarily FL and occasionally lower

I think a system like this could help ease pressure on officials and also aid development.

There is a great deal of sense in what you are suggesting but, as others say, almost too sensible for
Riley and his shower to implement it.
When SG2 was set up there was a lot of speculation, indeed hope, on this site that many if not all the SG2 refs, who are after all full time, would each get a few games each season to lessen the pressure on the PL refs and to aid their own development. Disillusionment set in for most of us when, if I recall correctly, not one of them was even given a sniff of a PL middle that first season. A chance blown, whether due to incompetent administration, indifference or whatever.
In my career I worked in a large office, a school and for a national charitable organisation where progression planning, teamwork and load sharing were all essential and brought success. I sometimes feel the PGMOL has lost the plot in all 3 disciplines

Simpson is also down to be at Derby on the same day- might be an error.

Derby are welcome to him!

Seems you now have Ollie Langford! Good luck! 😂😂😂

What about Jonas Eriksson?

Or Peter Fjordfelt?

I thought it was a rather poor appointment on Monday. There was no need to appoint him to that game on Sunday. It still feels very soon after the Everton game and is one of the highest profile fixtures of the weekend, given it's 3rd against 1st. It was always going to create headlines and a negative reaction, especially as it's an international break and so there's not as much day to day to talk about as there might normally be.

But having made the appointment, it now looks even worse that he's been taken off it - regardless of what the reason may or may not be. The presumption is going to be it's because of the inevitable reaction so it now looks to the outside like they're just giving in to public pressure.

The whole thing could so easily have been avoided by appointing him as VAR to Sheffield United V West Ham instead on Monday.

Or make appointments on merit and don't put him anywhere near a VAR !

Or that!

I would certainly put him amongst the weakest of the SG1 as VARs from evidence so far. I think a sensible aim would be to phase out the weakest 4 or 5 and look to bring a different half a dozen or so in, whether from current SG2 officials or elsewhere (retired officials, officials lower down the pyramid, non-officials, whatever you please!)

For balance, I think Coote has done pretty well on the pitch since being promoted to SG1 - better than I expected really, as I was not too convinced by him previously.

Agree with you that Coote has done well in the middle; I too was sceptical about his promotion but have been pleasantly surprised. His VAR abilities however leave much to be desired.......
What I still can’t get my head round is Lee Probert being turned down as a possible VAR official because he couldn’t take or pass a PHYSICAL fitness test. What a complete load of 🎱 🎱!

Once again no mention of James Linington. Brief appearance at Brentford the other week after missing 3 weeks but no sign at all in current fixtures.
Can only assume he has a longer term injury.

Who would have thought that a post about Lucy Oliver would morph into one about Grant Henley? 🤪
But that’s the beauty of RTR is it not

Or even Grant Hegley.

Bloody predictive text!
