Interesting that rustyref, but where 8 mins was the highest shown there in L2 last Saturday, at the start of the season 8 mins would have been at the lowest end of the range.

Harrogate v Walsall today, in the second half there was 3 separate breaks for subs before 90’ (with 1, 3, and 2 players substituted) , 2 goals scored and 2 injury stoppages for physios coming on with one of them for a head injury which took more than a minute for play to restart.

6 mins was held up on the board and ended up playing just over 7 as there was another substitution made after 90’.

I’d suggest at the start of the season the board would have shown 9 or 10 for those stoppages, not the 6 shown today.

Good performance today from Alex Chilowicz at Harrogate v Walsall, albeit in a relatively easy game.

Apart from there being only 9 fouls in total according to the stats which seems remarkably low, ALex played his part in letting an entertaining game retain it’s flow.

The only point of note from an otherwise faultless performance was when a Walsall player stumbled under a good challenge in the penalty area, didn't even appeal for a penalty, got up and carried on chasing for the ball only to then get pulled back and given YC for “simulation”.

Think Alex will follow in the route Bobby Madley’s return took and after this season acclimatising, will be SG2 next season.

However, the argument to why the additional time has dropped is because players have become more smarter and hurried up. Having said that, David Rock added on 3 mins at Crewe v Harrogate last weekend, where 6/7 should’ve been indicated as the away team keeper was wasting a lot of time - and not one booking.

Any other ideas on this?

I think players have hurried up a little, but not THAT much,

Your point about goalkeepers in interesting as that is definitely one inconsistency.

Various examples I have witnessed are one warned a couple of weeks ago after just 12 minutes (at 1-0 up) , which must be the earliest warning ever and then and I have seen some not get warned until 80+ mins.

I have seen goalkeepers receive a YC for blatant timewasting and also receive a YC when someone in the crowd has threw the ball back past them and they have had to go and retrieve from the edge of the penalty area.

I have seen a player receive a YC for "timewasting" waiting for a ball to be retrieved from further down the touchline for a throw in , when earlier in the same game the same referee stopped the same player from taking a throw in from the correct position using a ball off a cone and he was made to wait by the referee for the original ball to be retrieved, even though it was resting up against a wall. Ridiculous!

One directive which seems to have made a comeback recently is players leaving the field at the nearest point rather than trudge over to the 4th official, this appears to particularly enforced when there are multiple substitutions being made at the same break in play.

Interesting day for Tom Parsons and team at Walsall v Mansfield on Saturday.

A very good performance IMO for 99% of the game however (as usual!) the 1% was fairly controversial with a ball over/not over the line debate. You may have since seen Mansfield manger Nigel Clough talking about it and calling for goalline technology in the whole of the EFL.

From what I have seen, he made the case for it rationally and appeared more aggrieved with his sides failure to take their many chances in the game rather than with the officials on the day not awarding the goal, which is to his credit. To add to that, you could also credit Mansfield's players as they didn't carry any protests on and the temperature of the game didn't escalate. Maybe as the incident was in front of the Walsall fans, and if it was at the other end maybe it would have been different, we'll never know.

For a little context, it was first half, 0-0 at the time, and from an inswinging free kick to the back post the Mansfield number 14 (Flint), in very close proximity to a Walsall defender, the goalkeeper and the post, appeared, from some photos, to bundle the ball over the line.

Now, from the photo on this link to the BBC piece, you can see (a) how close it was, and (b) the position of the AR in relation to the ball and bodies potentially blocking his sight. Now I'm not sure how any AR could be 100% sure from that angle, in that sight line, that all of the ball is over all of the line?

General Discussion / Re: S BARROTT - Millwall v Ipswich
« on: Thu 15 Feb 2024 14:34 »
Another solid performance from Barrott. The penalty looked as if it was on the line therefore the award is correct.

Did what he had to do without fuss and looked comfortable all game.

Totally agree, it was a very good performance and how refreshing it was to see the players accepting decisions without surrounding him all the time. On the odd occasion that there was a query he dealt with it an talked to the player involved who then just got on with the game.
A good advert for the game after some of the dross seen at the higher level this season.

This to me is what separates the good, from the very good referees, especially at games I usually see in the EFL.

Far too many appear to have taken the 'clamp down on dissent' directive literally to the letter and don't appear to engage in any conversation with players around decisions.

Too many times you see a decision given (rightly or wrongly) and when a player  tries to engage with a referee, and by that I don't mean running 30 yards or with an over the top reaction, the referee far too often reaches for a YC first, often inflaming a situation after a possibly contentious decision and thereby making possible problems for their match control throughout the rest of the game when all it may have taken was a little explanation.

OK a player might not agree, quite often they don't, but at least in my experience if they know why you have given a decision it can take some of that heat away.

Football League - L1 & L2 / Re: Fri 9th – Tue 13th FEB 2024

Well if John Busby is the general standard of SG2 then I'll happily settle for our usual selection of EFL newbies and triallists in the future thank you very much.

He has had a shockingly poor performance in the Crawley v Walsall game. From letting virtually anything and everything go in the first 15-20 mins without giving a free kick, to giving FKs and waving yellow cards at almost any challenge for the rest of the first half...except the clearest YC would have been for a trip by a Crawley defender when he gave the Walsall penalty, which would 99/100 be a YC anywhere else on the pitch, and which conveniently would have been that defender's second yellow.

Onto the second half where he again lets all sorts of blocks and niggly challenges go until he then starts blowing up again for anything. Gives a YC to the Walsall GK for "time wasting" when he is clearly waiting for a signal to re-start after a substitution.

Into injury time and as Walsall clear a corner and break away over the half way line, he then blows to stop the game for a Crawley defender lying injured 40 yards back, in the Walsall penalty area with what was clearly not, and never looked like it was, either a serious injury nor a head injury. Game stops, Crawley player jumps up and slowly walks off to the sideline knowing he successfully conned the referee into stopping the game and the opposition attack.

He genuinely looked out of place in a mid table League 2 game, I shudder to think of the effect he could have on an SG2 game of any importance.

I can now fully understand the rise of the likes of Barrott, Allison, Welch, J.Smith, L.Smith et al virtually straight through SG2 as after seeing all of those on their way up, they are head and shoulders above some of the referees promoted/getting SG2 games in the last couple of years like Busby, Nield, Donohue etc.

Mixed afternoon for Lee Swabey at Walsall v Newport, whilst not having an impact on the result he was very inconsistent, mainly around foul detection/decisions, with players and the crowd unsure at times whether he would blow immediately for a FK, allow play to run for a couple of seconds then bring it back for the FK, or not give anything at all.

A very stop start game, not allowed to flow at all, not helped by Lee allowing  the usual game management tactics from a team in the lead, not that Newport needed to, as they were in an unassailable 3-0 lead after 35 mins!

Some stats sites saying there were 27 fouls in the game and not a yellow card given for a foul, must be some sort of record!?

The only card issued was a very late red card for Walsall's keeper I thought was possibly harsh. No disputing it was an intentional handball outside the area (correctly flagged for by AR1), however I'd debate it was a goalscoring opportunity if he hadn't handballed it, let alone an obvious one. Apathy had long since set in with the home fans to be too aggrieved though!!

I assume a similar situation must have happened in leagues that have trialled or are already using sin bins…i just wondered what would happen if a goalkeeper received a blue card?

I get that, but in the Crawley v Walsall case it seems very unlikely.

I would imagine a relatively small home crowd plus around 200 away fans, no rivalry or history between the teams and no flashpoints at all in the reverse fixture earlier in the season.

In fact, this would have made an ideal game for a trial referee rather than the strange looking SG2 appointment!

Saying all that, you watch them prove me completely wrong now and there be 5 red cards and mass brawl or something!!

A general question around 4O appointments for someone who may be in the know....how are these appointed, is there any logic behind them such as perceived importance of game, distance of 4o to home team etc etc?

For example the important looking L2 1st v 5th as it stands Stockport v Crewe game on Tues 13th has non NL referee Richard Eley as 4O whereas the less important/bang mid-table (14th v 15th) at Crawley v Walsall has Sam Purkiss as 4O.

There was some controversy last night around the Walsall v Morecambe , mainly about the 'lateness' of the postponement as the amount of rain seemed to have caught everyone by surprise.

Appears the officials did their usual arrive at the ground and walk around the pitch and then called for an actual inspection. They returned on the pitch at around 6.15pm with boots on and seeing if the ball rolled/bounced. At that point and from the videos posted online by the Morecambe media it appeared to me the pitch was just about on the playable side of borderline.

That though, was with over 3 hours until the match was due to end and with rain steadily falling and forecast to continue, which it did, and very heavily at times in those 3+ hours.

Ultimately the right call was made by Craig Hicks and team, hard as it was for the fans around and on the way at that time, especially the Morecambe fans who braved the trek down M6 during rush hour to get there.

Generally somewhere around 8-10 mins second half stoppage time is the norm this season in the EFL so I'd say 20-30 seconds allowed per sub would be very very short.

It would be nearer the 1 minute mark per sub stoppage from experience this season, especially with EFL referees appearing generally stricter on this and other 'delaying the game' stoppages than their PL refereeing colleagues.

While the early warning is commendable, I feel you may be a little premature with the suggestion of a much shortened fixture list.

The temperatures in most parts are forecast to be above freezing from around Thursday morning/lunchtime, so at least 48 hours before the Saturday 3pm kick offs, getting up to the almost tropical daytime temps of 4-6 degrees Thu/Fri/Sat, giving ample time for any frost to come of the ground.

If that forecast is correct, I'd expect very few EFL games to be called off at the weekend, especially as a lot of clubs have frost covers which can protect down to around -3 anyway.
