General Discussion / Re: Missing Refs
« on: Sun 19 Mar 2023 16:55 »
Tom Bramall, Tom Nield, and Kirsty Dowle are in Japan on a referee exchange program. Tom Bramall was in charge of J League 1 Gamba Osaka v Hokkaido Consadole Sapporo yesterday.

Talking about missing referees has S Massie-Ellis  more or less given up - very few on field appointments and a few VAR appointments - injured? - how long does someone remain on list with practically no appointments

It is interesting to see what the 'fans?' say
Quotes from match report
'the only thing which unites all fans is the poor quality of the officials' - 'they get worse and worse' -'you can beat the opposition but not the 12th man' -'disgraceful' - lino might bea bit embarrassed when he watches the highlights' - 'these refs are a disgrace' - 'another set of incompetent officials' -  and so it goes on - interesting how fans see things different
Iwonder were they all at the same match!!!!!

I always worry when I see the "some of my best friends are" phrase.

Why does that worry you? - I don't understand - I hope I havn't offended you in any way and if so I apologise

Sad report from Mr Southgate in todays news where he says he is increasingly worried about the decreaing number of English players in the Premier League - he quotes onlty 32% of players are eligiable for England selection and the numbers are going down
I have long thought that there should be a limit of foreign players allowed for clubs - there is so much money now involved this is extremely unlikely to happen (as I believe used to be the case -but I may be wrong)
The same applies to managers
Let's hope any pressure to import foreign referees continues to be opposed
I have nothing against any person from another country indeed some of my best friends have come from non uk people
Just thinking about the state of our national game

On a slightly different tack. I may be in a minority of one, but I do find it inappropriate and plain wrong to refer to referees, individually or as a group, as "dross." This reflects badly on the posters who do so.
All referees will make mistakes, all will have matches in which they will feel they not been at their best, but to term them dross is out of order in my mind.

I personly cannot remember this term being used {memory is failing a bit) but I certainly agree with you 100% and I also think that any other derogatory personal terms/words should also be avoided
A memory as far back as this morning should suffice !

Memory must be worse than I thought - although I still cannot see/find any reference to 'dross'

General Discussion / Re: Match of The Day
« on: Tue 14 Mar 2023 03:48 »
Overall I think I would prefer matches without presenters/pundits/summary and interviews - and just enjoy the match for what it is but obviously most people would probably disagree
Agreed but Commentators are very helpful for the blind.

Yes I agree and much to my shame I had not thought about that  and my apologies if I have offended anyone

I have just watched this match on BBC 2 and I must say that I really enjoyed the match
As far as I am concerned the absence of presenter/pundits/interviews etc. made no difference to me in enjoying the match - perhaps we could easily do without them at all and in  mens matches
Cheryl Foster I think has a good match

What type of device are you viewing on cwh? It's working fine for me on a pc but I know Charlieboy had some issues on mobile since the hosts decided to change the layout slightly.

Very strange now that page 14 has appeared it seems to have gone back to normal but page 13 is still not showing correctly

I am  using a PC - I will keep an eye on it  and see what happens and thank you for your reply

I've reformatted the way the images are hosted/shown. This has improved the layout and should be reflected on your side now.
Let me know if not, and I will investigate further.

Brilliant - as if by magic p13 is now displaying correctly
Thank you

Sadly I cannot find reference to a hymn tune called Axminster or Kidderminster ( or indeed CyrilLord ) so I am unable to return serve on the carpet theme.
I'm sure JCFC's Methods will find one for you!

Tune - Axminster composed by George F Austin appeared in Methodist Hymn Book 1917 -And are we yet alive

Having been an organist at Methodist chapels for over thirty years I found the use of 'Tell me' certainly declined    fairly rapidly  and I don't recall playing it for many years   - replaced by 'modern hymns' which many of the older congregations struggle with - and still do  in smaller Chapels where some organists find 'modern'rhythms difficult to play

I am delighted that you still use the term "Chapel" as was always the case in my family.

To return to a discussion on here many years ago, does your congregation prefer Hereford or Wilton?

Usually use Hereford - much nicer tune in my opinion but is slightly more difficult for congregations that are smaller number like 4 or 5 as is the case in many chapels these days if still open although Wilton is also used on occasions
