General Discussion / Re: AFCON Final
« on: Mon 12 Feb 2024 09:17 »
Referee: Dahane Beida (Mauritania)
AR: Emilio Dos Santos (Angola)
AR: Diana Chicotesha (Zambia)
4O: Bouchra Karboubi (Morocco)

According to (presumably) official information in The Sun, Beida, aged 32, was seen as a 'star' and was i/c of his third match in the tournament. I have not seen any of the highlights, but it sounds as though his appointment and performance could be likened to the Mexican who took charge of the 1990 World Cup Final.

Backhouse and team watch out….

David Richardson went off injured (hamstring injury) during the Sunderland U21s game on Monday night.

Ceri Williams went off injured (some sort of arm/shoulder/collar bone injury) tonight during the Sunderland Ladies cup match.

Not much luck for officials of Sunderland games this week - speedy recovery to all!

Wasn’t there a run of games last season (IIRC) that Portsmouth home games attracted a lot of injuries to officials?

Years ago Portman Road had a bit of a reputation for causing match officials to have to be substituted due to injury but that was often said to be down to the lushness of the grass. It wasn't Fisons territory for nothing !

Including 'Topsy' Turvey who broke his leg during a game but carried on to the end of the game regardless. A collision rather than the turf I believe.

Very good game for Backhouse at Plymouth
. If he turns up at Home Park we may have a slight delay whilst he diverts back up to the Sunderland Stadium of Light.

Andy Haines once made the trip to Plymouth from his home in Tyne & Wear for a Plymouth v Sheffield Wednesday game.

Add to that David Rock abandoning at Cambridge after not very long!

9 minutes to be precise which must be one of the quickest abandonments of modern times on the EFL. There was a brief sight of the pitch on the local news after the game was abandoned, and whilst I would have some sympathy with David, I don't think the pitch would have been playable at the start of the game, just 9-10 minutes before it was abandoned. The rain was heavy yesterday but it was not a sudden monsoon. Perhaps David could have waited a bit to see whether conditions improved, as I recall Mr Horwood did at Gresty Road a few years back.

It does sound as though from those present that the match should never have started. It was a dry day in these parts until early evening. Cambridge University recorded a quarter of its average February rainfall between 7:30 and 8:30 which was rather unfortunate for last night’s match and those attending.

Point taken, and it sounds as though David Rock, along with the players and fans, were just very unlucky.

I agree with all of the above and thought it was really good that the BBC commentators commended Jones and his team more than once. Credit too to the managers, players and fans for persevering on what was an atrocious night to be playing or watching football.

One rather telling remark from the commentator after one of the ARs flagged for offside. It went something like, "good to see an early flag and a confident flag knowing that VAR could not intervene to overturn the decision". Food for thought?

plus to mention Mr Cann again getting everything spot on.

Best Assistant Referee in my life time, it'll be a shame when he finally hangs up his flags. Consistently outstanding for years now. (György Ring & Vencel Tóth II make up my top 3 of all time!)

And not bad at Pointless either!

Happy with both Martin Coy and Neil Hair. Good luck to them

A big derby match for Neil Hair at the top of L2, Stockport v Crewe. I won't get to see Martin Coy this week, his 2nd visit of the season to Crewe Alex.

Assuming the uncovered games are being refereed by SG1s, it seems strange that top SG2 James Linington has not got a game when others have two in a full fixture list, and particularly as he is a 4O so clearly not out of action for some reason.

At first I thought they were appealing for a PK, which would have been correctly ignored. Wonder whether Graham Scott just got lost in the moment.

Agreed. I wonder as an alternative whether Graham thought the oncoming forward had touched the ball, thus making it OK for the goalie to handle the ball. I cannot think why else Graham would have ignored a fairly obvious transgression of the laws. Not sure whether the AR on that side would have been in a position to help but probably not.

Is it possible please to quote the match and official(s) for each post on performance, as TTFL has done above? Posts can be really informative, but it is a bit of a faff having to decide where 'Neil' was refereeing in 'Essex' as an example.  'Neil Hair, Colchester v Forest Green' would do fine, thank you.

General Discussion / Re: Thomas Bramhall - Fulham vs Everton
« on: Wed 31 Jan 2024 09:24 »
I've not seen it, but Times reports that Fulham's Robinson appeared to handle the ball when clearing it away after it had struck the crossbar and rebounded back into play. Everton players were apparently less than pleased that that it was not penalised. Any thoughts?

I watched most of the Villa v Newcastle game on TNT and thought John Brooks had a very good game. Firm but fair was how I saw it and yellow cards seemed correct. One flag for offside from Akil Howson seemed mighty early in the present-day circumstances with VAR, and I was a bit surprised that John went along with it and pulled play up immediately. It was probably as well that Howson's flag proved correct...just. A 2nd goal for Villa was ruled out for offside and VAR confirmed the decision after a lengthy delay which seemed right.... again just. Good to see 9 minutes added time at the end in view of the stoppages in the 2nd half. A good night for John in my view.

Good to see Simon Hooper on the eagerly awaited M23 derby between Brighton and Palace, a game that was often entrusted to Andre Marriner in days gone by.
