Football League - L1 & L2 / Re: Sat 2nd – Tue 5th MAR 2024
« on: Sun 03 Mar 2024 11:41 »
I thought he looked the part as previously stated, but how the Morecambe no 38 was never cautioned after committing numerous foul's was a surprise. On the whole i thought he was inconsistent with his recognition of offences as the game went on, and how he never awarded a penalty when the Crewe N5 was held and then pulled down was astonishing.
I think he could have the makings of a good referee with more experience, but yesterday was not the best of performances.

Fully agree, having seen the 'wrestling move' above. The wrestling actually began in the first half when the Crewe player went down rather too easily for my liking, but the move shown on Twitter (above) in the 2nd half was definitely a penalty. Both players were later cautioned for 'handbags' at a corner which was probably deserved. I did laugh in the 2nd half when Charlie Kirk - returning to the Alex after a less than successful spell in L1 - took a corner on the left which was not even close to being in the corner quadrant. If he had gone any further forward, he would have been in the penalty area. However, Farai  - perhaps understandably - was more concerned with what was going on in the goalmouth and did not spot this gamesmanship, and fortunately for him, nothing came of it.

Crewe Alexandra FC (First Team) v Morecambe FC (First Team)
Football League 2
Referee: Hallam, Farai
Assistant Referee: Harty, Thomas
Assistant Referee: Gratton, Danny
Fourth Official: Mather, Simon

Another afternoon at the Alex and another triallist to see and comment on. When the teams came out, I thought I might be seeing Ruebyn Ricardo for the second time as Farai was a dead ringer for RR - young, tall, dark and looking terribly imposing and fit. In fact Farai was also very like Stephen Parkinson, another triallist who we saw earlier in the year at Crewe, so maybe being young, tall and fit is a pre-requisite for being on the 'Elite' team list. Anyway, to the game, I thought Farai was good for the first 25 minutes or so, but then, like Stephen, he started to lose the plot and miss some fairly obvious fouls. And how a Crewe player got away without a card for hauling down a Morecambe player as he set off towards goal, I do not know. The pattern continued after the break and the game teetered on the brink of becoming ugly.. Yellow cards were correct but fouls continued to be missed and there didn't seem to be much rapport with the players. Perhaps that will come with time and experience. In 1-2-3 order, I would place Farai second. He was certainly better than Parkinson but not as good as Ricardo. Unlike some in the Main Stand, I don't blame Farai in any way for the way Crewe threw the game away, it had to be seen to be believed, and I wish him every success in the future.

Fully agree with the above. I noted that he was sporting a FIFA badge. Hopefully not a silly question, but is that for England or Australia?

Third triallist to visit Crewe Alex in recent times. I'll try and get there to see Farai. Key game for Tom Reeves, Grimsby v Forest Green, at the bottom of L2. I wonder whether Charles Breakspear has turned down any thoughts of promotion because of work or other commitments. It has happened in the past with Dean Whitestone and (I believe) Ben Toner. As people say, a safe pair of hands in the EFL.

Big games for the relatively-inexperienced (at this level) Lewis Smith and Andrew Kitchen. A sign of things to come perhaps?

I saw him at Crewe in his first ever FL game last season. I thought he was good, yes, a bit robotic but then I thought back to when I was being observed in the 1970s when everything was done by the book. I think he will make a good EFL and likely SG referee, given time and experience.

On reflection, I now agree that the appointment of Lewis Smith to the Palace v Burnley game is ill-advised. If Burnley lose, they can effectively kiss goodbye to the PL after just one season. If Palace lose, they really will be in the thick of the relegation struggle and, with a new manager in post, the supporters will not take too kindly if they don't get off to a winning start, particularly if a draw or defeat is mired in controversy, be it down to Lewis or someone else in the officiating team. When Michael Salisbury refereed his first PL game at Selhurst Park, Palace v Villa, he showed his inexperience, with Atko looking concerned on the touchline, and the Villa milked this for all they were worth, running out 2-1 winners. I am certain that both managers on Saturday will know that Lewis is very inexperienced and I hope that things do not get out of hand as they appear to have done at Craven Cottage last weekend.

No great surprise that 'royalty' is in the form of Craig Pawson at Leeds.

A crucial game for both sides at Selhurst Park on Saturday, and I wish Lewis Smith and team all the best.

Non-League / Re: National League Premier (Step 1) - 2023/24

Oldham Athletic FC (First Team) v Kidderminster Harriers FC (First Team)
National League - Premier
Referee: Eley, Richard
Assistant Referee: Mansfield-King, Lewis
Assistant Referee: Woolley, Daniel
Fourth Official: Bell, Elliot

Not perhaps a key game but a sell-out crowd expected for this game. Reason - £1 admission fee to celebrate the safe return of Oldham Chairman Frank Rothwell after becoming the oldest person to row the Atlantic, age 73, and all in aid of charity. What a guy. 'Arise Sir Frank'?

General Discussion / Re: AFCON Final
« on: Thu 15 Feb 2024 15:48 »
Referee: Dahane Beida (Mauritania)
AR: Emilio Dos Santos (Angola)
AR: Diana Chicotesha (Zambia)
4O: Bouchra Karboubi (Morocco)

According to (presumably) official information in The Sun, Beida, aged 32, was seen as a 'star' and was i/c of his third match in the tournament. I have not seen any of the highlights, but it sounds as though his appointment and performance could be likened to the Mexican who took charge of the 1990 World Cup Final.

I’d equate it more to Sergio Gonella in 1978

That really is a damning verdict. Gonella gave possibly the worst performance in any major international Cup Final on record.

Not much better with the 'professional' Brazilian referee in 1982, it has to be said.

Oh dear. The last visit from Mr Rock to Mornflake stadium back in 2019 was a disaster…
We’ve had him once since away but I wasn’t there. Good luck to him.

Yes, Crewe v Cambridge, a red card which was contentious and a penalty award which was a disgrace. Fortunately, the 3-2 win for Cambridge did not stop Crewe from being promoted at the end of the truncated season. It was one of David's first games as a EFL referee and I'm pleased that he has clearly made progress since then. Alas, I shall not be there to see him again on Saturday.

Part timer Acme, not good enough haha!

It's not because I'm a fair weather fan either. I am however a senior member at the Alex and attend when I can, so something like 10-12 home games a year.

Pleased that Friday's top Championship game - WBA v Southampton - has gone to SG2 Sam Allison rather than an SG1. Ditto for David Webb who gets the Lancashire derby at Preston.
