Well it's clear now that Peyper is out which is just so unfortunate for him!
My point was about Berry being ahead of Gardner in the rankings according to the source that AR1's were 5-8 on those and could well have done the New Zealand SF if that was the case.
As for the appointments - a little surprising that Raynal wasn't featured IMO and the chose Gardner. It does lead me to think that he may well now be backup for the final if England get's through!
I mean the sheer lack of English involvement suggests that they will feature heavily in either the bronze placed match or final.
Like others, I'm really surprised that Nika hasn't featured at all in the KO stages (possibly a bronze placed appointment in some capacity perhaps).

The ERFU is headed up by Tony Spreadbury who is basically along with Bryce Lawrence in charge of selection with of course Joel Jutdge.
I thought Carley was inconsistent in the Wales vs Fiji game and then basically had two games that were completely dominated by 1 side (not his fault).
Yes WR want to fast track players, not an issue for me - I hope WR mark each game using a weighting system for the level of difficulty, because I don't see how let's say Paul Williams (who I rate btw) is placed higher than the likes of let's say Nika or Andy Brace as they had at least 1 match of a greater difficulty. This suggests that they were marked down for their performances.
The same would go for Luke Pearce & Karl Dickson who both had 4 matches suggested that Luke was marked down in his matches.
Based on the rankings - it's Nic Berry who then comes into play with a semi over Angus Gardner as a neutral if Peyper is out.

Basically, you have to be behind the line prior to the kicker starting his run- there are reports, this wasn't the case and no footage shown at the time (there apparently is subsequent footage which I haven't seen) - quite honestly, there are 4 other officials watching this including the TMO, you would like to think this was checked!!
On a separate note, we are being reliable informed that the AR1's on the quarter finals were ranked 5-8 over the group games. Wow seriously? Carley over Pearce? Dickson over Gardner? I'm flabbergasted by that to be honest.

I can understand France's frustration with the refereeing as there were 3 key decisions which went against them. In fairness I have not looked for decisions which went against South Africa.
Firstly the deliberate knock on. It looks wrong and looking at the footage I believe it went forward.... A difficult call I must say.
Secondly the charge down. It was illegal as the defender crossed the try line before the kicker commenced his kick. Footage has emerged which shows this. My question is how do officials look for this noting where they are positioned. Also given the rarity  of such an event of as a charge down, were the official looking for it? Was there a lack of concentration?
Finally, the last penalty - I feel it was wrong but this is easy to say in slow motion. There have been several instances in the WC where players have not immediately latched on to the ball and got away with it! It is very difficult to police in real time.
O'Keefe may be uncomfortable with these decisions but in a classic game of rugby few referees, if any, will have got everything right.

Oh I haven't seen the footage of the Kolbe charge down - so yeah a couple of decisions that went against France that they wouldn't be happy with (which you can understand the frustration)
Shame really for O Keeffe

After Garces unlikely for me - I would say only for Eng v NZ if Peyper is unavailable.
Think a semi could be a realistic option or possibly bronze medal.

Another absolutely enthralling day of rugby.
Wow - England made hard work of that in the end. To be honest, I thought Raynal was fine, with no glaring errors.
I thought the first half of the France v Boks game was one of the greatest halves of rugby I have ever seen! I mean the second half was pretty damn good too!
For Ben O Keeffe, I thought he had an outstanding first half and under all that pressure - really impressive to see! I thought he was good in the second half BUT I think he missed the crucial hands on the deck (not supporting body weight). Really tough to see (could he have had some assistance?). Overall, he should be really pleased with his performance for a first QF.
Moving forward, it really does come down to how injured Peyper is - because it's clear to me that as planned all along Peyper was planned for the opener and Barnes for the final (if all goes according to the script).
Semi's should be
NZ v Arg - Peyper (if not injured) or Barnes/Raynal.
Eng v SA - It's either O Keeffe or Raynal (dependant on Peyper' injury).
Final
Eng v NZ - Peyper (if not injured) or Raynal.
Eng v Arg - Peyper (if not injured) or O Keeffe.
NZ v SA - Barnes
Arg v SA - Barnes

Funnily enough I thought that was Dickson's best game in the middle for quite a while - I normally find him quite frantic and doesn't give me the confidence, in this game he was calm and really assured. There are lots talking about the two incidents, thought the first one Adams was lucky not to get a yellow. I did however feel the second one was probably the right call (even though there are lots that are complaining about it).
A real shame for Jaco ( I hope it's not too serious) and he can participate further in some capacity).
Despite what both sets of supporters state on social media - Wayne Barnes for me was absolutely excellent last night. A top draw performance in an enthralling game.

I've said this for a while now, he was unlucky in 2019 as he would have been inline for the final along with Garces. If England don't make it to the final, I just don't see anyone else's name on that list quite honestly. The only question is if South Africa reach the final, how will Barnes and WR feel!

Depending on how Jaco's injury is, this has certainly opened the door for others now with Raynal, O Keeffe in prime position to take those posts (if they perform well). I'm sure WR would want to wait and see, giving Barnes a rest. I'm still positive unfortunately that for Pearce & Gardner, the best they can hope for is an AR on a semi final (but who knows).

So SF 1 locked in
New Zealand v Argentina for me will be Raynal's if he performs well today.

In recent additions - as mentioned in earlier posts, the 4 refs in the Ko stages will be involved in the semi's and final and I don't see that changing. What has changed is obviously the use of 2nd AR's not coming form the panel of refs (I find quite interesting).
Let's also not forget the 3 people making the appointments - a Frenchman, Englishman and Kiwi!!
The reason Garces got a QF/ SF & Final was for a number of reasons!
1. Obviously the teams involved mean't that Barnes & Peyper were ruled out.
2. Peyper was ruled out of a semi for the infamous Wales pic - therefor not considered at that stage for a Final.
3. Nigel Owens reported himself injured after the semi final - which only left 1 option.

I personally would expect Pearce & Gardner as an AR now in one of the semi's.

For me and dependant on teams involved and performances, I would expect to see O Keeffe and Peyper on the Semi's with WR probably hoping Barnes will be available for the final.

Third place could go to an Aussie this time too!

I too like Luke Pearce and he had another strong showing - clearly for me will be England's number 1.
Agree with the Carley & Dickson comments.
Thought Nika had another solid outing too - he should be over the moon with his performances during his set of 3 matches (seriously this guy has got it!).
I just don't think WR have complete faith in the Aussie's to be given a QF match. Think the best they will get will be to work as AR's on the final or work on the bronze medal match.
History tells us that 2 of the QF refs in recent times will handle the semi's too.
TMO's have been good at picking them up, but don't forget they view a few times very quickly before calling for a check.

Yep once again Karl shows his erratic style which just makes me lose faith in him. Agreed, he will gain tremendous experience this tournament and with one more match involving the hosts, he'll gain even more.
Barnes usually clear considers and consistent self.
I do like Paul Williams too and feel that he has been treated harshly in recent times and with these appointments during the tournament (not one so called big game). He can be satisfied completing his set of appointments controversy free and should be pleased with his showing (unfortunately, I believe this is where he ends his refereeing duties in this WC).

Well I certainly wouldn't have guessed that scoreline between NZ & Italy!
In the end another one-sided affair with no issues and a comfortable night for Matt Carley to finish his set of refereeing appointments. Overall it's hard to judge his performance with two matches that were completely dominated by one team (you can only ref what's in front of you). He had issues win the toughest game of the opening weekend as was discussed previously which can't be ignored.
However, overall, not a disaster by any stretch.
I don't see further appointments for him during the tournament as referee.

I agree
I said before - the quarter final refs should be Barnes, Raynal, Peyper & O Keeffe
I'd guess at Peyper & either Raynal or O Keeffe for the semi's
If England don't get to the final - Barnes surely for me is the main candidate (everything seems set for that considering Peyper got the opener).

Another enjoyable game to watch yesterday with Samoa v Japan.
And, another game where we had at least 3 cards in it (when will players learn?).
No issues for Jaco and his team with another competent outing for me. The first referee to complete his set of fixtures in the middle - Have to say, based on his performances, I would imagine at least a QF match is warranted for the South African. Overall a decent display showing just how good he is!

A nice game to watch yesterday with Uruguay and Namibia.
The real talking points once again come from the bunker with a number of cards late on. I'm not talking about the bunker as I just don't understand some of the decisions coming out from Roland Garros!
Raynal was ok - nothing special from the Frenchman and probably his weakest game of the 3 he has had so far.
There were a couple of forward passes I thought from both sides that lead to a try - once again, I feel Ben Whitehouse didn't want to make a call if he didn't have to!
