Non Footy Appointments / Re: Six Nations 2024

Unfortunately Luke Pearce has had to replace Pierre Brousset as referee for Ireland vs Italy as he hasn't recovered from the injury he sustained a few weeks ago.

Shame for Pierre, but great to see Luke twice and his 50th appointment!!
Congrats to Mr Pearce.

Agree with those comments. Thought it was a really good watch. I would actually have liked to have seen more of exactly why they came to the appointing decisions.
Clear also Joel has Bryce Lawrence, Craig Joubert, Stuart Berry & Tony Spreadbury as the main selectors during the tournament. Couldn't recognise any of the others.
However, I looked at it that Luke, Andy & Nika were in line for a QF along with Matthieu (who they opted for).
Joel basically said, yes there were mistakes but Ben still should be rewarded.
In the hierarchy, it was clear that Carley received a low mark for his handling of the Wales v Fiji game, saw a few ambers but the rest were green. I can understand that shot did potentially show Paul, Nika and Matthew were in the lowest tier, but, we can't be 100% sure. I would also imagine like in football the actual games are graded too. So, even if you had a decent match with Chile v Argentina - your mark would never be over a certain number and automatically keep you low.

I completely agree, thought Williams and O Keeffe put in a decent showing and a good weekend for the officials overall. O Keeffe is clearly well ahead of Williams in WR's view, I actually think Paul is pretty harshly treated by WR.
In terms of Pearce, it was really interesting to see on the documentary that Luke was in line for a QF (where they ultimately ended up opting for Raynal). As I said previously, Karl's stock went right up in terms of WR view with is QF performance (and Bryce Lawrence put him forward to referee the SF between Argentina and New Zealand).
Looking forward to seeing Nic, James & potentially Pierre (if fit).

Of course the French wouldn't be happy.
I thought Karl has actually settled down now as an official - previously I wasn't that convinced by him. However, in the World Cup his best performance for me came during his replacement in the quarter final.
Yesterday, I thought Ireland got a couple of decisions where I actually thought they should have gone to the French. The big decisions and 2nd yellow were correct for me.
Karl was certainly not the reason the French lost (who were really poor last night). Ireland utterly destroyed them!
Overall, I thought the Englishman did well!!

I've never had any major issues with Peyper, an excellent referee and thought he was harshly treated by fans. Unfortunately, his world cup experiences were disappointing (especially the last 2 versions missing out on a semi-final). I wasn't convinced he would make 2027 to be honest either.
I do hope he stays in the game in some capacity - good luck to Jaco, a great servant to the sport.

On paper, some mouthwatering ties with a great spread across the nations over the next match days.

Unfortunately I don't believe he is at the required level (it seems WR don't believe he is either). they are focussing on Hollie and Sam now with Ben Blain behind them.
The same with Damon Murphy where WR are looking at Jordan Way.

The media also need to take responsibility and ownership.
During the RWC Final and the panel afterwards , I remember watching the NZ TV and they absolutely lambasted Foley & Barnes. I had to switch off - it was awful!!

Really interesting set of appointments. WR really working on bringing the newbies through quickly with Brousset, Piardi & Ridley as part of the refereeing panel. Congrats to all 3
Surprising that Craig Evans doesn't get the same push as the above mentioned.
Doleman gets a good match (WR moving him up the ranks) after a couple of let's say "lesser" matches in previous versions.
Very clear that WR have lost faith in Mike Adamson & Damon Murphy - really not surprising for me and I feel that will be the end of their push.
Frank Murphy also seems to be shelved too.
Congrats to Davidson on her achievement - well deserved!!
O Keeffe & Peyper getting rather low-key appointments (meaning for me they are trusted and need to help the newbies settle in the panel). Seems Peyper will work towards 2027 and will surely be favourite for the final if SA miss out.
For the English lads - plumb appointments for all 3 really with WR really pushing Karl getting the opener (and what an opener). It seems that the number 1 spot is between Dickson & Carley for me with Pearce being slotted down into 3rd spot.
Amashukeli given a fab appointment (I had him down for the Calcutta Cup tbh). Continuing his good set of matches and deservedly so!
Raynal's appointment may seem low-key but on the last weekend - could be a deciding match and for me absolutely no surprise that Gardner gets the biggie on the last weekend (keeping O Keeffe away from France for now).
Expected appointments for Berry, Williams & Brace.
I couldn't see who would come onto the AR panel form the Southern Hemisphere - Now we certainly have a clear idea which is great to see Schneider (who I rate). Ferreira is now going to be pushed. Leale & Ramos come in for the NH.
With limited spaces on this set, it seems that Grove-White, Murphy (Aus), Trianini & Jacobs have been sacrificed to allow for new AR's to come in. With larger windows in the summer, this is not a bad thing.

Non Footy Appointments / TOM FOLEY

Very sad news that Tom Foley (TMO in the WC Final) has decided to step away from international duties due to the vile abuse he's received since the Final.
More evidence that authorities need to take swift action otherwise decent refs will just walk away!

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/rugby-union/67613298

I feel we won't see Tom Foley back for a while (if at all on the international scene).

Good to see a lot of refs getting run-outs as the potential next group of top officials

Congrats to Sam Grove-White & Anthony Woodthorpe on the debuts this year!
Carley gets the repeat of the final last year, good signs for him!

WR have made a statement stating they don't discuss match officials - let's not forget that it came from a NZ publication!
There are also very good instagram posts which clarify things etc and counteracted the 4 phases of play. New Zealand like every country will submit questions to WR and the referee to review and respond.
Take that article with a pinch of salt and let's move on!

Non Footy Appointments / Wayne Barnes Retires
« on: Thu 02 Nov 2023 15:09 »
As suspected - Wayne has officially retired!
For me, one of the best referees in the modern era by a country mile!!
True legend of the game and wishing Wayne all the very best in his retirement.
Will be sorely missed
