General Discussion / Re: Coote> Oxford v Arsenal

If the penalty incident had been at the other end and a penalty awarded against Arsenal for that we would never hear the end of it.

General Discussion / Re: D BOND - Leicester v Fulham
« on: Thu 05 Jan 2023 14:36 »
In a somewhat delayed response to a previous post by Whistleblower.

I have the privilege of knowing two current SG1 Officials, both of them, whilst suggesting that The Championship is sometimes more challenging, would aver that the step up to The Premier League is collossal both physically and psychologically with the latter of these two elements being the more impactful initially

I'm still deciding whether to take umbrage at Whistleblower referring to the 'bottom of the Premiership' in this context when Fulham are 7th! Does this mean we can have Oliver/Taylor/Gillett every week for now? I'm certainly hoping our next few games including two matches against 'the Filth' are given strong appointments.

Take as much umbrage as you like takethejag, I have plenty to spare 😇

Fulham are having a great season, a Club for which I hold no brief but have always felt well disposed towards. If you would like Oliver/Taylor/Gillett then I hope your wish may be granted.

I had to look up the word umbrage as that particular noun escapes my vast dictionary!

I always thought that it went across a river in East Yorkshire ---every day's a school day.

Or a certain manager at the game which I watched. Embarrassing to say the least.

A truly horrible game to referee with players falling over if they lost the ball or someone came within touching distance.
Horrible conditions which did not help matters at all.
Lots of niggly fouls and little niggles after the ball had been played.
Players wasting time and feigning head injuries and things needlessly erupted very close to the end when several players got involved in handbags, resulting in Leeds keeper and Bruno Guimares being cautioned.

There were 8 cautions in all and I still maintain the theory that many officials who were laid up during the World Cup have lost match sharpness, this being Simon's second match in a few days after a six and half week lay off.

I watched the match last night and I also watched Darren England performing at Turf Moor the night before. I would say that neither referee performed to their maximum potential, however, it did make me wonder just how much the six/seven week lay off had affected their performances.
In effect, the gap has been very similar to the break between seasons and we know that you have to get back to match sharpness, which can take some little time/
In addition, have they been given different instruction as to how they officiate with Howard Webb coming on the scene?

General Discussion / Re: VAR Accuracy
« on: Wed 21 Dec 2022 22:06 »
PGMOL has admitted that there have been a few incorrect VAR involvements/ non involvements this season. However, this number is slowly reducing. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/64057906

No information about these wrong decisions although we can all guess some of them?

https://www.espn.com/soccer/manchester-united-engman_utd/story/4836068/arsenals-goal-at-manchester-united-among-6-var-errors-in-premier-league

Surely we shouldn't have to guess about anything relating to VAR ---should we? I never did whilst refereeing, I always gave what I thought I saw with my own eyes and, mostly, this was accepted by the players.

General Discussion / Re: Manchester United Player Behaviour
« on: Mon 14 Nov 2022 22:36 »
Will this deter the players from behaving as they did in future? I suspect not.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/63573410

I agree. Ronaldo could probably pay the fine out of an hours wages.
A fine of this nature means nothing. Until the F A start hitting clubs with points deductions for such behaviour I fear it will continue unabated.

Suggesting points deductions is absurd, with all respect. In (some) other countries referees punish dissent, mobbing and poor technical area conduct consequently. Naturally, their behaviour is much better. It really isn't that difficult...

It happened in 1990/91:

In the aftermath of the infamous Old Trafford brawl between Arsenal and Manchester United in 1990/91, there was much speculation as to what punishments were likely to be handed to individual players and the clubs.

The FA finally announced their decision, deducting Manchester United 1 point and Arsenal 2 points.

There was one very notable thing missing in 1990/91 ----the Premier League! The FA were actually in charge in those days ---weren't they?

If our officials clamped down on this behaviour and cautioned players, along with the odd  dismissal, the Premier League would be up in arms claiming that officials are being unfair to their stars and denying the fans the opportunity to see them in action.

There is a mentality of 'protectionism' of the PL brand and this has led to much of the physicality going out of the game at the top level so that their stars are not out of the game for long spells with injuries.

It is obvious to me that the FA no longer run football in England. It is the PL, along with the TV companies, who have the biggest say in which way the game is going. Tin hat on now!

General Discussion / Re: Andre Marriner - Forest
« on: Sun 06 Nov 2022 11:02 »
Forest Cheated Out Of Points. On front of BBC page. Not seen the game but do not need to. This is not acceptable even on this forum apparently  I.e. use of the word cheat.
It undermines referees and does a disservice to the refereeing community.

I agree, however, they have intimated that it was Forest player Gibbs-White who actually said this.
I find this hard to come to terms with because almost every player is involved in trying to gain an advantage by fair means or foul.

General Discussion / Re: Graham Scott - Wolves v. Brighton
« on: Sun 06 Nov 2022 10:51 »
I've only watched the highlights but Mr. Scott seems to have had a good game. However, I have an issue surrounding the sending off of Nelson Semedo. Mr.Scott was 100% right to show the red card but I was disappointed to see that he didn't caution the Brighton player Kaoru Mitoma for his repeated "you have to show him a card Ref" gestures. He certainly deserved it and I say that as a Seagull of 50+ years standing. In my opinion, this is something that needs to be eradicated from the game. I understood it is already cautionable but, evidently, I'm wrong (unless Mr. Scott didn't see it).

I totally agree, I thought that it was pathetic the way that Kaoru Mitoma repeatedly waved his imaginary card around.
I have to admit that it would have given me great pleasure in saying "Do you want a card? Well here you go then ---have a yellow and stop acting like a spoilt child"  No doubt I would then have been criticised by all and sundry because I have upset somebody.

Very enjoyable game for the neutral. Two teams trying to win the game, playing in terrible conditions, very good display from the officials and no intrusions from VAR to spoil the celebrations for 6 decent goals. Certainly a very good advert for League One.

General Discussion / Re: Jeremy Simpson - Burnley v Reading
« on: Sun 30 Oct 2022 20:32 »
For context, Reading denied a clear penalty (admitted by the Burnley manager) in the 92nd minute, Burnley score a 94th minute winner. IMO Ince's frustration is justified, there have been so many really bad decisions in the Championship this season, and it seems like there is no accountability for referees. Simpson is in my opinion one of the weakest SG2 referees, but seems to come back week after week. Hope the PGMOL changes will bring about some improvement, things cannot continue to go the way they currently area.

https://twitter.com/TheTilehurstEnd/status/1586392840544083970?s=20&t=1GelVRvWp6-5U-5Y4FFwUQ

More context was that Ince failed to  mention the stonewall penalty that Burnley should also have had in the very early stages of the first half when Burnley's centre back was wrestled to the ground as a corner was coming across.
Decisions/non-decisions happen every week in every game, surely Ince should be used to that. Perhaps he was doing a Jose by taking focus away from the fact that Reading have only picked up 4 points from their last 6 games and have dropped from being in 4th place and just 3 points behind the leaders. In two of  those last six matches he has blamed the referee for his plight.

What puzzles me about that penalty incident is the fact that the AR was the nearest to the incident and did not react at all as far as I could see although the majority of Burnley fans thought that they had got away with a poor challenge.

It can't possibly be wrong because VAR is ALWAYS correct ---isn't it?
