WHy did Darren England give a foul throw when Ward-Prowse lifted his back foot?
Surely this no longer applies because it is never penalised week in or week out by any official, therefore, I thought that it was another IFAB Law change which I had missed, there have been so many.

Maybe a crisis of confidence for Michael Salisbury after his incorrect intervention against Calvert-Lewin last week. This one is right on the edge for me, and Gusto could have few complaints if that had been upgraded to red.

Wasn't that Craig Pawson?

I was going off the BBC report of the incident which states it was Salisbury. Even if he was support VAR he should share the blame !

I got it the wrong way round! Salisbury was VAR & Pawson SVAR

Third Round Proper

Thu 4th Jan 2024
Crystal Palace FC (First Team) v Everton FC (First Team)        Live on ITV4
FA Cup
Referee: Kavanagh, Christopher
Assistant Referee: Bennett, Simon
Assistant Referee: Leach, Daniel
Fourth Official: Robinson, Tim
Video Assistant Referee: Salisbury, Michael
Video Assistant Referee: Pawson, Craig
Additional Video Assistant Referee: Aspinall, Natalie

I eagerly await the day when they have a third Video Assistant Referee and another Additional Video Assistant Referee.
Surely they would get everything correct then --wouldn't they? I won't hold my breath!

Lots of recent events at the elite level plus attending quite a number of Academy games as a spectator has me questioning as to just how long it will remain a contact sport as I have known it for over seventy years.
Sadly, I think that it will not be too long before any contact is penalised one way or another and the officials will be the butt of criticism, possibly more than they are are now.

The only world that’s a penalty kick is in Anthony Taylor’s robotic application of the laws of association football and if you happen to support Manchester United.everyone else knows exactly what Fernandes did .

The modern game at its best!

General Discussion / Re: Sam Barrett - Spurs vs. Burnley

Referee has done quite well here, not a nasty or tough game to referee but has had a good grip.  But 7 minutes is bizarre.  Physios haven’t been on once, a few subs and one goal.  Mad times.

You seem to have forgottten that Charlie Taylor, the Burnley left back, injured his shoulder and the physios came on and it took almost 2 minutes for treatment and  eventual removal. They were then not allowed to bring a sub on for him, although one was ready.
Spurs scored a goals and iy was almost one and half minutes before the game restarted. Spurs also got a free kick late on that three players addressed the ball but then left it for another.
7 minutes were about right as far as I could see. One thing that struck me on tonight's match was  the fact that so many Spurs players fall over for absolutely nothing, just the same as so many other Premier League players.

Sam Barrott refereed very well indeed as he has done in the other matches I have seen him referee this season.

Too true Claretman. I do not criticise officials, I didn't when I played at semi-pro level and I certainly don't now.
I played over 500 games at semi-pro level and also officiated at a similar level when I stopped playing and I am at a total loss as to where the game is now going.
IN three years IFAB madee over 178 changes to the Laws of the Game and their interpretation, mainly to accommodate the introduction of VAR, which only applies to the elite level of football. This was upp to 3 years ago, I have not even bothered about what changes have been made since because it is not doing anything to improve  the game or the fans' enjoyment of it.

If my comment is disgraceful, then it is my opinion and I shall not withdraw it. The game is being ruined by gimmicks.
The people I feel very sorry for are the officials who are crucified every week for trying to do a job which they carried out very well until they reached SG1 level.

Once the players realised that they were not going to be able to con him by constantly falling over, probably about 25 minutes in, the game became a better game and he handled it very well.
He was the same at Burnley a couple of weeks ago when  we played the Hammers.

Having seen both penalties I don't think either of them are penalties especially the 2nd one where I genuinely cannot see any contact and am surprised that VAR did not recommend a OFR where as with the 1st one there is contact but not enough for me to say that it should have been a penalty.

VAR was Stuart Attwell who proved on Saturday at Villa that there is only a need for a very minimal conact to award a penalty, therefore, he would not get involved. Sad isn't it?

The worst decision of the season to date. That’s shocking.
You're right, the player making a tackle like that has got to be one of the worst decisions anyone has made this season. It truly is a shocker.

The modern game which leaves those of us who have played at a decent level and then officiated at a similar level deciding that I should change my allegiance to cricket and Rugby League.  WHy do we not just play football without a ball ----it is no longer an important part of the game ---except for possession statistics.
A simple game made complicated by those RUINING the game.

ANother game which convinces me even more that I shoud not waste money going to watch players whose sole intent is to 'con' the officials. The amount of players falling over, holding their heads and rolling over and over in their attempts to influence officials is now getting beyond a joke.
Players win the ball fair and square but are penalised because they are too aggressive or whatever reason is now given. May I ask if this is still a contact sport because in my 500+ games as a semi-pro when I was in the RAF a lot of these players would have been laughed at. Similarly, when I refereed after I retired, some of the ludicrous behaviour of players would have been dealt with amicably but with a stern warning as to  their future conduct.

THank goodness that I can spend my money in watching Ashington play in the Pitching Northern Premier League East where the players get on with the game and the officials do their best. They make mistakes but players, management, fans etc. accept that and get on with the game which is so much more enjoyable without all the histrionics of the 'elite' game!

General Discussion / Re: M Oliver - Arsenal v West Ham
« on: Sun 31 Dec 2023 10:19 »
I usually say Michael Oliver is the best referee we have but tonight in our game he was very poor I thought, yes I get he had to give the first goal but it was out and you didn’t need to see the ball to see it was over the line you could see the line and the ere was no yellow on it, it was out so poor from Pawson on var there we should had 2 pens at least one for the foul on Saka as Chelsea virtually had a penalty for the same thing last night yet ours wasn’t given so poor there as well should of had one in the first half where ball had gone and Soucek went through on Jesus I think another poor decision, Oliver and Pawson wasn’t great West Ham’s penalty was stonewall there no complaints on that one though

The problem we have here MCPridz, is that you are basing your opinion that Michael Oliver had a poor game on two so called (by yourself) obvious penalties not given and the ball out of play goal. The ball out of play can’t be proved either way, and is certainly not Oliver’s call. End of argument.
As for the two non penalties, you are the only person on the planet, including quite a few Arsenal mates of mine, who seems to think they were fouls. Saka dived, it’s not even close to being a penalty. And as for the tackle by Soucek, anyone who thinks that is enough for a pen is deluded.
I’ve genuinely not heard an opinion from one other person, including all the comments on here, who thinks either tackle is a pen. It’s just you. And only you.
So that leads me to conclude that Michael Oliver is still a brilliant referee who gets the vast majority of KMI’s correct, and you’d make a bloody terrible assessor!

Yet the Saka challenge he went down on for the penalty was exactly the same penalty that chelsea got given the night before, so therefore it should of been a penalty and it’s another one of the inconsistencies, and yes I do still want Olivier to referee our games, I just thought he wasn’t great in this instance, and the ball out of play has been proven it was out and we have had an apology from the PGMOL as there got the timing wrong when looking at the ball out of play and concluded it was

Do you have a source for it being proven the ball was out of play and the PGMOL apologising?

This is the only thing which I have seen which mentions 'apology', however, it is still non-committal as far as I can fathom. It says that the ball was in play but then disappeared because of Bowen's thigh ---so ----yes, we know that, however, going by the way that players place the ball for corner kicks and penalty kicks these days, there is every probablility that 1mm of the ball was still in play and, by TLOG that is all that is needed. Well done to the onfield officials.

It was good to see a referee using common sense and not falling for the usual tricks, used by so many players these days, of falling over because someone breathed heavily in their vicinity.
The game is in danger of becoming a glorified 5-a-side non-contact game just so  that no player will suffer injury, which I am sure that FIFA would love.
West Ham deserved the win tonight and Arsenal need to concentrate on playing a physical game instead  of trying to 'obtain decisions' by whatever means possible.

General Discussion / Re: Rebecca Welch - Fulham vs Burnley
« on: Sun 24 Dec 2023 12:12 »
I watched the whole match and am happy to say that Rebecca had a decent game.
I think that the caution for Bassey came about on the advice of the AR who was nearest to the incident and could not have been seen clearly from Rebecca's position. It was a debatable card, however, I have stopped trying to work out what is worthy of a caution these days.
She  made one or two mistakes relating to goal kicks and corners and could possibly have awarded a couple of free  kicks, although with the way players fall over for nothing these days it is always a difficult area to assess.

She was confident in everything she did and answered any queries from players quite firmly and communicated well with them and her assistants.
I can confidently say that she wasn't the worst referee in the PL yesterday from  what I saw.
