General Discussion / Re: IFAB MEETING

Still nothing about concussion and concussion temporary substitutions. It’s much more important the sin bins which will inevitably lead to further controversy given the consequences of playing with one less player for a period of time.

Probably because no-one has yet worked out how to stop teams "gaming" the system to their advantage.

General Discussion / Re: John Brooks - Everton vs Man Utd
« on: Mon 27 Nov 2023 09:27 »
Average for me. Missed Garnacho kicking the ball away ( 3 other officials can see that).
On the other hand, he did well to keep tensions low considering Everton’s situation.

That was the big error here.  I can understand Brooks missing the ball being kicked away as his eyes were on the challenge and any possible afters.  Why did not any of the other three match officials help him out by confirming that the offence had occurred.    He could have correctly cautioned Garnacho and then correctly cautioned for dissent.

What is it they say about teamwork .....?

General Discussion / Re: A TAYLOR - Nottm Forest v Brighton

I am pleased that AT applied Law and dismissed Dunk for abusive language directed at the referee.  His actions have been generally applauded (outside Brighton) and commentators have added that more players acting in this way should receive the same sanction.

BUT AT is one of England's "big two" referees and has full licence to take such action as his employment contract is secure for as long as he wants it.  Add to that the fact that Brighton are not one of the EPL's "big clubs" and this makes it a more straightforward decision for him to make.

I wonder if a much more junior (and less secure, in employment terms) referee is confronted in the same way by a "big name" from a "big club"?    Picking names from thin air ..... Thomas Bramhall and Bruno Fernandes.  How confident are we of the same outcome?

The regimented insistence on AR's running left backs / right wings 100% of the time does not help.

In the "olden days" the ability of a referee to be able to operate with AR's (Linesmen as they were once called) on either diagonal could win a few brownie points with groundmen, for what they were worth!

Tim Robinson gets another good game albeit his 2nd arsenal game in 4 matches

Three if you choose to count his appearance in the WSL last Sunday.

Apologies, pressed the 'funny' icon by mistake on reply #2 and there appears to be no way to retract it.

It’s quite a familiar thing for unintentional finger tapping on the emoticons on this site, and no way to remove said “error” if you’ve quit from the page and moved on. I’ve done it many a time unfortunately!

But if the finger was in an unnatural position - should VAR recommend an OFR for a penalty kick??  ;)

Given the two handball penalties given last might, perhaps attacking players should stop trying to be creative and put the ball in the net, and simply aim for the arms of a defender?

Going to take back my negative remark about Anthony Backhouse.

I read an interview given by Sunderland player Dan Neil who at half time when going down the tunnel respectfully asked the referee what his thoughts were regarding the "offside" leading up to the Norwich goal with a perfectly rational explanation given before each going there seperate ways.....

Player happy and it appears a good rapport shown by Mr Backhouse.

Same player sent off three weeks ago for asking the same question against Middlesbrough.

Perhaps the way the question was asked might have been significant?  In cases of dissent / OFFINABUS it was often less important what was said but the way in which it was said.

Scott Simpson with a 4O in the Championship in his first season on the National List

Not unusual if you check all appointments.

I don't recall Tom Jones singing that...

I am sure Huddersfield Town will be hoping to enjoy the green green grass of home...

General Discussion / Re: Scott Jackson Stevenage v Port Vale
« on: Sun 22 Oct 2023 12:56 »
There have been a number of threads this weekend where the willingness of the ARs to intervene where they are in a position to help the referee has been questioned.  It is a long time since I refereed at any decent level and had the benefit of neutral ARs, but I always emphasised the need to work as a team and ensure that - as a team - we got the right decision.

Fast forward to 2023:  What instructions are given to today's top level ARs in this regard?  I have no evidence, but do suspect that some of the referees to not want ARs for overtly intervening (i.e. flagging) for anything other than ball in/out of play, direction of restart and offside.  I do appreciate that the comms allows ongoing verbal communication but if this is how teamwork is taking place today the uneducated need to be made aware.  Either though a future Howard Webb / Michael Owen programme or by ARs flagging (where appropriate) to support the communications that have taken place.

I'd welcome contributions from those who are more "in the know" than me.

General Discussion / Re: C.Pawson - Merseyside Derby
« on: Sun 22 Oct 2023 12:46 »
I thought what should have been a second yellow for Konate was because it was cynical ,  Pawson has no empathy for the game he could /should have used common sense with regards to Youngs 2nd yellow card

Not without getting marked down he couldn't.  If you trip a player who is moving into the penalty area like that it is always going to be SPA.

Again I come back to consistency, the thing that people keep clamouring for.  But you can't have consistency if a referee lets a player off a caution because it would be their second.  Michael Oliver was criticised for doing just that a couple of weeks ago with Kovacic.

You can either have consistency or allow a referee to use their common sense.  You cannot have both.  In my experience a player / coach / manager / pundit / fan will ask for consistency when it suits them and the ask for the referee to use common sense when it suits them.  As a result you - as a referee - are never going to please everyone (or possibly anyone!).  Those who appear to try the hardest to do this (Pawson is a good example thereof) struggle to get the big decisions right.

For those saying second caution for Konate, what reason for the caution are you using?  Holding isn't a cautionable offence, it needs to stop a promising attack, or be reckless which it clearly wasn't.  For me the two situations were very different, for Young's fouls the attacking player was clearly getting to the ball and they were pretty much textbook SPA.  For Konate's potential second caution the pass was overhit the ball and there was no way he was getting to the ball even without the foul, so I don't think a promising attack was stopped.

This is why the media cause so many problems, they don't actually use what is written in law to judge decisions, rather what they think the decision should be.

"Holding isn't a cautionable offence" - 100% correct.   But in a very high percentage of occasions, it should be.  Holding is never accidental, and usually the illegal and desperate act of a beaten player.  If that is not a text-book definition of Unsporting Behaviour, then it should be.

General Discussion / Re: A strange anomaly
« on: Wed 18 Oct 2023 17:35 »
Given that almost half of the eligible countries will qualify for Euro24, I don't think it's an unforgivable sin if one or two countries get in via the back door or, as in this case, the upstairs bathroom window.

Perhaps the real issue is a slightly different one.  The scheme for back-door qualification is, as I understand it, part of programme to replace what were deemed to be meaningless friendlies, but whether replacing friendlies where teams devalue the game by making six substitutions with a incomprehensibly complicated competition where teams maintain sporting integrity by making only five substitutions is a great sporting advance is not a question I am qualified to answer..

I suspect, however, that the thread of your words amounts to answering it, qualified or not!!

Non Footy Appointments / Re: Rugby World Cup

Now that France are out of the competition, what are the odds of the home nation getting the "consolation prize" of providing the referee for the final?

The only action I have seen from the game is the disallowed Scottish goal.  Given the trajectory of the ball, along with the relative positions of the Scotland player and the Spanish goal-keeper a case can be made for him being in an offside position (fact) and impeding the goal-keeper in his attempts to see and (possibly) making a save.  So if it was disallowed for offside, then I would understand and agree with the decision - which is brave, given my Scottish other half (although she has not seen the incident!).

I would be less comfortable if it was disallowed for a foul on the goal-keeper.  But, any contact by the Scotland player on the Spanish goal-keeper could be seen as a foul as the Scotland player cannot play the ball and his contact can only impeded the goal-keeper.  Whether this is enough to constitute a foul is open to argument.
