Coote MoM closely followed by Gundogan.
Not Tierneys best performance but by no way a poor performance.

32
Sadly Grealish invents / maximises contact again. Tierney falls for it and AWB picks up a caution which is SO wrong
Mistimed Reckless two footed challenge.

The handball law is ruining football.
Defenders obviously are no longer allowed to jump.

Not sure i like seeing an angry Taylor, i would prefer an evil stare ala Collina

Oh to be able to see that epic Kassai death stare back out on the pitch, I miss that look.

Filip Glova used to be all grumpy with some pretty cutting looks until I described him that way on here & he started being all smily! Missy bmb does hope that was coincidental & not down to him reading that review on RTR and potentially also discovering that he is the top ref totty! Although that of course could be why he's so smily...

Danny Makkelie has some great angry looks. I'll text you some from the weekend - hilarious!

I seem to have a thing for cute but grumpy men!

Angry does not suit Anthony Taylor, he's normally pretty chilled and I can't say I liked it!  He was very smily before kick off at least!
And he wore the right colour too just to suit missy bmb

After issuing all those cards i thought maybe anthony had changed his name to Antonio.
A very difficult game to referee both on the field and off it.
Think both teams did their homework on how far to push the limits with the referee.
A clamping down earlier on players surrounding the referee by sanctioning accordingly would have helped but alas the powers that be dont want referees to do this, so we get what we get which isnt good for football.
Only questionable decision was the overturned penalty.
Not sure i like seeing an angry Taylor, i would prefer an evil stare ala Collina Or to a lesser extent Oliver.

General Discussion / Re: Andre Marriner Retirement

Official announcement with some words from Andre.
Fantastic words from a lovely man and a very good referee.

36
Congratulations to all those retiring, a big thankyou to you all for putting in the hard yards over the seasons, i wish you all well in the future.

I wonder if Graham Scott will have his own personal boards to take to games next season ?

Coote is the very embodiment of a “modern” referee -= he has a very limited understanding of the game, has no feeling or empathy for the game and appears to have no man-management skills - what he does have is excellent fitness and movement, the ability to brandish a yellow card and he “looks the part”

He is a product of a broken coaching system, which filters all the way down to grass  roots level - referee are taught to referee by numbers, give safe free kicks and and referee for themselves rather than the game, the players and spectators

Things will only get worse, the majority of “coached” referees coming through the CORE system are Coote clones

Have to agree, he is awful, trigger happy on the whistle and with the cards. No managing skills yet when he is on VAR he needs murder to be committed before intervening.

Another two correct offside decisions from Simon Bennett, there has been quite a few by him now this season, perhaps why he isn't with Oliver atm
A thought and that is all it is a thought, Perhaps Simon Bennett maybe coming off the uefa/fifa listings could be a reason for him not being with Michael Oliver at present.

International Appointments / Re: UEFA Europa League 2022/2023
« on: Mon 29 May 2023 22:38 »
Congratulations to the English officiating team. I guess this solves the question of whom the European masters consider the better out of Taylor and Oliver or perhaps relative ages are a factor ? Let's hope everyone in the team justifies the honour given and the faith placed in them.

I think Atkinson did the Europa League final in 2015 (Clattenburg had already done the Super Cup at the start of that season) and then of course Clattenburg went on to do CL/Euros final in 2016.

I think perception for a while has probably been Taylor is slightly ahead of Oliver at UEFA level so this appointment might reflect that. But as mentioned Oliver did Super Cup at start of season and relative ages means makes sense to give it to Taylor now out of the two.

For the most part, Taylor and Oliver's international careers seem to have been able to go neatly alongside one another without either especially having a detrimental impact on the other - both were selected for Euro 2020 and World Cup 2022 for instance and seemed to do relatively well.
Wasnt Atkinson in the frame for the champions league final in 2016, but unfortunately was injured in the latter stages of that season ?

Bmb has been nursing a broken heart all season knowing this was coming 😭

Always #1 André 😘

You make it sound like he didn't have a choice?
I guess When your body tells you enough is enough then you really have no choice.
Fantastic career, great servant,  hope all goes well for him on his retirement from on field duties

I was at the game today, i feared for Coote in the appointments section and hoped he would prove me wrong but alas he didnt. He never seemed to have control, allowing lots of dissent. To me it was a typical Coote performance and became difficult for him as his foul detection was random at best, felt sure the game would get out of hand, at one stage he appeared to lose his cool.
Having said the above quite a few of yellows early on were deserved and perhaps a few were lucky to avoid sanction.
The players from both sides didnt help the game flow, but then neither did the referee either, it became very niggly.
He certainly wasnt flavour of ghe month with both sets of players.
AR1 (Bennett?) seemed to have a bit of a mare too, firstly having a goal disallowed for offside by var when he didnt flag and then later in the same half flagged for an offside but was overruled by var for the Brighton goal.

Rob Jones looks like he got the best deal with the shortest trip.

Lots of refs heading to London

Darren England gets the short straw from Doncaster to Southampton

Not as short (or long, in miles) as Jeremy Simpson and Oliver Langford to stand between the dugouts!
Nothing like a good ride out and about on a bank holiday weekend.

42
Think i will give up on my ambitions of being appointment secretary.
A few good appointments, some not so favourable.
Not keen on Coote at Villa Park hope he proves me wrong, but more so hope he manages to complete the full game in the middle.
Good game for Andre and sadly as some have said looks like it maybe a swansong.
Tierney left out of the limelight along with Pawson, Kavanagh and A Madley.
Deserved high profile games for Hooper and Brooks with Jones getting the spiky Man Utd v Fulham game though most of the formers first eleven will probably be having a rest.
Oliver as var after refereeing the championship play off final the day before as expected.
With regards Scott, he certainly doesnt seem to have the confidence of his employers.

Swarbrick is VAR on the League Two playoff final so logistically don't think he can do a final day game. Suspect a SG2 referee or even a left field appointment like Barrott will do the Palace v Forest game.

Rebecca Welch would be an outside bet….

Var for rebecca is an option as she has that duty in the womens european cup final and will probably have had that duty in other womens FIFA/UEFA competitions in the past.

Rebecca Welch is fourth official in that Champions League final. It is probably more appropriate for a promotion to SG1 candidate to gain some experience if they have trained for the role.
Memo to self dont rely on memory at my age check appts before writing.
Thanks suffolkref for correcting me.

Also, corners where the ball has a distant relationship with the arc!!!   Perhaps the law should require themajority of the ball should be inside the arc.
Has any senior referee ever permitted the same positioning of the ball in respect to the penalty spot?
What are penalty spots i hear coming from the dorset area.
