Thank you for the comments on here about this match! Really really interesting read.
It does seem to be PGMOL's internal view that Smith was good in this match - another PGMOL 'insider pretending to be an outsider' like Gallagher, Chris Foy, also wrote on twitter explicitly of a "terrific refereeing performance on debut".
Circling the wagons or the genuine internal assessment?
He has been rewarded with another premier league game this weekend with two teams at the low end of the table, so pgmol must be very happy with his performance or is it the confidence booster of get straight back in the car after an accident?

Typical all over the place performance from Coote today. Didnt card when he should have done, carded for inocuous fouls. Seemed very reluctant to brandish a second yellow to recipients who deserved it. Always seems to be surrounded by players, probably as they are confused as to what he is going to do next. Always seems like a rabbit in the headlights when games get tough.
Never fills me with any confidence when i see his name appointed to a match, but then he never did when he was sg2 either.

Game getting very tetchy and physical now. Attwell does tend to struggle in these types of encounters but he isnt the only one in sg1. Not sure he saw the Holgate challenge, but there is a worrying trend for sg1 officials to go yellow when sfp occurs something i have felt for a few years now. Very good and quick intervention by Oliver on var. Hope the second half calms down and goes well for Attwell.

The Fulham rookie gamble backfired massively on this occasion.
Smith started quite well, but by the end was totally out of his depth and had lost control, although it made for an entertaining game.
Between him and his team there were a litany of errors, a missed penalty for both teams, a wrongly disallowed goal for Villa (it seemed), haphazard foul detection, a clear corner missed, much unpunished time-wasting by Martinez, a deliberate back pass went unpunished and at least 3 minutes were lost during added time and not added back on. Towards the end it was mistake after mistake with yellow cards like confetti for mostly innocuous challenges or the resultant dissent from the player disbelief.
As (I think it was) TTFL pointed out in the appointments thread, this fixture has has a fiery history at times, so not definitely not the game to test a rookie referee and that proved to be the case.
Martinez is a very good goalkeeper but he is also very good at gamesmanship too. A shame that it sounds like the game got too big for the referee but as i said in the appointments thread clashes between these two teams over the years that i have witnessed, have tended to be very feisty and many a top class referee has struggled to keep in control of things, so not the best match to appoint a newbie to. Hope this is a big learning curve for Lewis Smith and that he goes on to prosper in times to come.

The match officials have been confirmed for the 2024 Carabao Cup Final
Sunday 25th February- 3pm- Wembley Stadium Christopher Kavanagh Mark Scholes James Mainiwaring Tim Robinson Wade Smith
John Brooks Marc Perry
Congratulations to all appointed, all fully deserving. Superb for Kavanagh, great for Scholes and well deserved, Scholes is a very underrated assistant. I will be looking out for a young lady in crowd sporting a banner asking if she can have the referees yellow shirt after the game.

Michael Graham-Smith and Sam Nogajski umpiring the third and final T20I. It seems like CA are still undecided on who will be promoted and are using this series as an experiment of some sort. First full nation T20I match for Graham-Smith, but interestingly not his T20I debut.
Think the CA resources are stretched with two involved in the India v England series, blocker Wilson retiring, the ladies Polosak and Sheridan involved in the womens Australia v South Africa series hence we get the above appointees

Grandad Stroud has a more important occasion than the Cottage!
For those at the Cottage, a return for England for a second week but a very exciting appointment in Lewis Smith.
Madley being appointed to Liverpool confirms the appointment of Kavanagh, Mainiwaring and Scholes as this years cup final team.
Poor to appoint Tierney to what is a huge game at the bottom at Goodsion, considering the controversy with Everton in the past.
I am sure grandad Stroud and England could do a quick swap to save on mileage and keep TTFL happy. Lewis Smith could have his hands full at the Cottage, this games has been feisty over the last few seasons. Villa also seem to get their share of newbies too. Think missy bmb will be very happy a little later this week with the League Cup Final appointments and may be packing a yellow bag for a trip to Wembley.

Great game for Sam Allison.
Looks like Stroud will be available for the boards at The Cottage.

I would say that serial offender Fernandes was lucky not to receive a yellow card for a foul on Bailey under the nose of Richard West in the first half, based on the Casemiro yellow brandished and probably more so for persistent infringement

When I saw the replay I was surprised VAR didn't intervene because to me it was a clear foul by the GK. Even Dermot, as well as the 2 pundits thought it was a penalty.
The issue for me in this situation is what the referee actually sees. If the protocol is for VAR to ask the referee what he saw, and Anthony Taylor says he had a decent view and didn't think it was a penalty, is VAR going to re-referee the incident? If the referee says he didn't have a clear view or a good angle, then it's a different matter. If the latter was the case, I don't understand how VAR could not recommend an OFR. Or is it a symptom of a less experienced colleague not wishing to override a FIFA elite referee by telling him he got it wrong?
Surely the referee tells the var what he saw and then if the referee didnt see the arm movement of Dubravka then the var should ask him if he has seen it. If the referee sees the arm movement of Dubravka but doesnt think it worthy of a penalty kick then is it clear and obvious? Taylor does seem to have a habit of giving what one would consider soft penalties but not give them when more force is involved, an opinion i am sure many will disagree with.

Poor half for jones last minute Casemiro booked for no contact and then varane escapes yellow for clear push
I think Ar2 Richard West had a hand in the foul being given against Casemiro. Dissent by a player immy after receiving a yellow card rarely gets punished a bit like goalkeepers time wasting after receiving a yellow. Jones tried to let the game flow, a few random foul detections but a reasonably competent performance overall, from my point of view pity my teams attackers werent as competent.

Didn’t watch it live but by all accounts an entertaining game.
Much of the talk seems to be about a penalty call in the second half. Not given on field, no review recommended.
Having only seen it once, Newcastle look like they got away with that.
I would say it goes in the i have seen them given category and by Taylor, but doubt var would intervene even if he had given it. Thought Taylor had a pretty good game overall, he did miss a foul/yellow for Yates but also played a good advantage for an attack.

Just an attempt by the law makers trying to complicate things further and make things even more subjective and inconsistent. Just apply the laws as they stand correctly.
