Who appeared in 10 F.A. Cup Finals (not Kinnaird or Mandirin) 5 as a player and 5 as an umpire?

Charles Wollaston appeared in 10 of the first 16 finals

The 3-6 defeat at Wembley in 1953 is/was often talked of as England's first defeat by an overseas nation
although that overlooks Eire winning at Goodison in 1949

Also neglected is the return match in Budapest later in the season when Hungary proved that the first match was no fluke

J.J. Baxter - the elusive first name is still needed for this RAF man (Warrant Officer)
Interestingly listed as Hereford (a typo?) as he joined the F.L. refs list in 56-57 as Royston (Hertford) as stationed at nearby RAF Bassingbourn

Both the Cricket and Football Field and the Blackburn Standard of Saturday 1st September 1888 carried the rules of the new Football League

A list of 37 referees (Upton has 21) had been sent to all clubs. If they could not agree on a referee the League would appoint one.

The referees fee was a guinea plus 3rd class railway fare (Upton's first mention (page 78) is for 1890 - the same fee but 2nd class fare if over 20 miles, clarified the following season to 20 miles one way, not in total)

Both papers list the 37 with the C&FF also giving their full addresses, along with those of the 12 Club Secretaries

Comparing them with Upton he has 5 (Craven, Duxbury, Gregson, Hughes, Smith) not listed in the 37 so making an overall total of 42

Address details augmented by the details given in the 32 page supplement with the Athletic News of Tuesday 11th September 1888

thank you, the same pattern is showing itself with the early Vase officials - they were Southern/Isthmian types

F.A. were quite formal with W for William, not B for Bill, R for Robert, not B for Bob

I am trying to think of an R/N combination

1571
Bentley was John James Bentley, Sec. of Bolton Wanderers at the time
Brownlow was Henry Brownlow of Halliwell, near Bolton
Helme was Thomas Helme of Farnworth, also near Bolton

no luck with the other two but a fortunate find of another kind

James Kirkpatrick was the 8th Kirkpatrick Baronet of Closeburn, Dumfriesshire.

In his youth he was a keen sportsman, and helped organise the Scottish football team in the representative matches March 1870 and February 1872.

He was an "umpire" in the first F.A. Cup final and played in goal, latterly with a broken arm, for the Wanderers when they won the F.A. Cup in 1878.
