I Spy Old Refs! / Re: David Hutchinson - birth place?

July 1940 eliminates the first three options

However there were five David (no second name) Hutchinson's born in the third quarter of 1940

Hull, Huddersfield, Ilkeston, Durham West, Newcastle

None of them very close to Cambridge

Strangely online Guildford R.A. have a "who am I" with a much younger David Hutchinson
born in Ilkeston whose highlight seems to have been in local Surrey matches

Manchester United v Arsenal

David Hutchinson - start of his final season

Pulled a muscle after 34 minutes and replaced by line

Reports differ between J.J.Richardson (Woolton, Liverpool) and J.Caulkin (Stoke)

However Liverpool Echo interviewed Richardson about it, he was back as a North West Counties ref the following week

Thanks but as stated above that is almost certainly incorrect, once it gets put down it gets repeated

Wiki appears to have many places of residence incorrectly as their birth place too

Northern Premier League

Bishop Auckland v Prescot Cables

Referee was injured and line took over but with no fourth official, and a local volunteer not deemed up to standard, the match was to be abandoned

So spectator Pat Partridge (then aged 70) took on the role and the match was completed (1-1)

Partridge was the referee for Arsenal v Liverpool on 16th September 1972 when one of his linesmen tore a muscle and Jimmy Hill took over.

Sources state Leeds but no birth registrations match that

Only Aylesbury or Cockermouth

Perhaps he did not want the latter beside his name?

10.04.1993 Manchester United v Sheffield Wednesday

Manchester United claimed their first title since 1967 with an 88th minute winner in a match that had 7 minutes 16 seconds added time which was the start of the "Fergie Time" myth. Alex Ferguson later watched it back and said there should have been 12 minutes.

John Hilditch took over after 60 minutes

John Martin was due to referee the game but he had been injured and replaced by Mike Peck.
15 minutes into the second half, Peck injured his Achilles and John Hilditch took over.

"The replacement was from the local F.A., so we took our time changing over to give him a good chance to compose himself.
While that was happening, Mike offered me his watch but I turned him down because I'd been keeping time myself and I carried on using my own."
