Both the Cricket and Football Field and the Blackburn Standard of Saturday 1st September 1888 carried the rules of the new Football League
A list of 37 referees (Upton has 21) had been sent to all clubs. If they could not agree on a referee the League would appoint one.
The referees fee was a guinea plus 3rd class railway fare (Upton's first mention (page 78) is for 1890 - the same fee but 2nd class fare if over 20 miles, clarified the following season to 20 miles one way, not in total)
Both papers list the 37 with the C&FF also giving their full addresses, along with those of the 12 Club Secretaries
Comparing them with Upton he has 5 (Craven, Duxbury, Gregson, Hughes, Smith) not listed in the 37 so making an overall total of 42
Address details augmented by the details given in the 32 page supplement with the Athletic News of Tuesday 11th September 1888

A more modern one for you all
Are you fed up with referees now coming from West Midlands, Merseyside and Avon instead of Great Bookham, Stonehouse and Merthyr Tydfil?
In that case try this
F.A. Cup finals 2001-2019 have seen a total of 90 appointments (it is up to 7 per final now)
These have been shared around 70 officials (1 has done 3 different roles, 18 others have done 2)
8 have been Michael's, 3 Lee's and 3 Simon's
Try and identify all 70 from their home towns (at the time of officiating) with the counties removed

Sources state Leeds but no birth registrations match that
Only Aylesbury or Cockermouth
Perhaps he did not want the latter beside his name?

Referees stayed with finals for the replay(s)
but I am unsure that lino's always did (they certainly were different for the 1935 replay) as lino's are harder to find, particularly for replays
Can anyone help with any of the 10 remaining matches below (names given for first match where known)
Full initials & towns/counties also needed for any new ones found
